PhillyTom reports below that PSU fans have stated emphatically that the booing at the Michigan match was for the officials who took so long to make a critical fan interference call at the end of set 3. It wasn't booing the team, according to these people.] Nonetheless, the question is worth exploring. As a general matter, we think that’s shameful to boo players. Boo the officials if you want — they’re adults and they’re paid. Boo players if they behave in an unsportsmanlike manner (obviously a subjective standard, and we've never found occasion to boo for that reason), or make it clear they don’t care if they win or lose (even more subjective, and we've never done that either). But booing a team because they are struggling? That would win our Lame Lame Lame, Shame Shame Shame award.
What do you think?
Update:
I think it's unlikely I would ever boo the players -- on the theory that the situations I've listed where booing might be appropriate are too subjective, and the coach is in by far the best position to determine if "scolding" is appropriate.

There were reports that the crowd booed the team. We didn’t hear that, but if true, we think that’s shameful. Boo the officials if you want — they’re adults and they’re paid. What do you think? PSU fans on volleytalk said emphatically the booing was for the officials who took so long to make a critical fan interference call at the end of set 3. It wasn't booing the team, according to these people. That said, if there are boos when the team is playing badly, I don't think that is how fans should behave but it's not the end of the world. These young women have been playing in pressure situations since they were tykes, and boos or not, they know they're not playing the way PSU teams are expected to play, and it's painful to stumble in front of your home crowd. I've often thought that the worst sound at Beaver Stadium isn't the boos, it's the muttering/grumbling sound that you can hear when Penn State is playing badly. 100,000 people grumbling is a pretty scary sound, because individidually they don't want the players to hear them grumbling but there are so many people feeling that way that the sound gets amplified and carried to the field anyway.

Didn't hear any booing. What I did feel and hear was compassion and concern from the fans for the girls spirit and well being.

One poster on VT explained very nicely what happened regarding the booing -
The fans were not booing the Penn State team. They were booing the referee's decision to call fan interference and cost PSU a point, which would have given them a 23-22 lead in Set 3. This call delayed the action for almost two minutes, and it cooled off the PSU team and their momentum. They ended up losing 25-22, and the fans booed the official, who made the call, some more afterwards because they felt he cost PSU the set.
Interesting, I wonder if some of the girls thought the booing was being directed at them, and that was why they were crying? Although, they were probably crying because of a really emotional talk they got from Aiyanna after the game.
Regarding Booing in East PA: You have gone to or seen an Eagles game have you not? I may be assuming too much, but it's not hard to notice Philly fans booing their teams when they play poorly. Eagles fans are especially notorious for it. Having said that, my personal motto is to never boo the home team, no matter what. What's the point of being a fan if you don't support your team.

But really the boos -- even if they were directed at the team, which they weren't -- would be the least of their worries. What's wrong with the team, and can it be be patched up in the next two weeks?

Good question. Wish I could ask coach's opinion. I'm sure he'd have the best answer.

I was there that night. I can confirm that no booing on players. It's on some questionable calls from ref.
