Interesting thing i saw at the Howard U stats compile for the year: their differentials v opponents weren't pronounced. Barely there. Seemed proportionally out of whack with their record of late/as conference winner. Something to watch: 5'8" OH... some taller than that but who was that MI player who gave us fits at 5'8" (Knopp). it may be like we're playing a whole court full of Knopps.... I hope Knot... Yes, but don't forget, both Michigan and Wisconsin have several players over 6', who take the blockers' attention away, but if all the opponent's players are short then our blocker will have a much easier time keying in on them. Also, taller hitters will have a much easier time hitting OVER the block. Also, look at the difference in hitting % and blocks/set. Whoa!!
I love it. You're on a roll ("Stay around for the second set. Don't forget to tip your server.") Actually, we had some trouble with Demi Morales of Wisconsin, as I recall, and though taller than 5-8, 5-11 Kelli Bates is also somewhat undersized for an OH, and she has also had some good moments against Penn State. As for Morales, she was especially gifted at going after high hands in 2013, but coach Sheffield replaced her with the taller Bates in 2014. At 5'11" Bates is more respectable but still a liability at blocking. Both Bates and Morales also had something else going for them, they had the best setter in college sending them great balls to kill. Howard should be a real easy match for PSU.

Not sure if anyone's posted it or not...Saw this article in the Collegian. It talks about Holcomb's role as the libero. Good article, but I'm not sure if them calling her the current libero is an honest mistake or if things have changed since the loss to Nebraska. I think Keeton takes too much grief from this board and others, but I have a tough time imagining Rose would go back to her so suddenly. Pierce wasn't all that great against Nebraska, but no one really was besides Whitney. Then again, I didn't think Holcomb was the problem after the Michigan game & the coaching staff made the change. If the staff wanted to allow Keeton a game to get her confidence back, I guess (theoretically) the match against Howard would be it. Something to watch, I suppose. colleg.in/1O5BrrhOne more note, all of the neutral party Penn State postseason previews that I've seen have been positive. It's probably just people giving State the benefit of the doubt, but maybe we're overblowing their struggles a bit? I believe the talent is there & although I can't imagine them flipping a "greatness" switch, I could see momentum slowly building as the matches get tougher. Even though State is a young team, they still have a ton of experience in pressure situations. Thanks for sharing the Holcomb article, I had not seen that one. I have always said that Holcomb is a fantastic passer but she struggled in her digging and back row communications, which could be a freshman thing. Keeton has a lot of upside and time will only make her better, but she has struggled a bit this year. Having said that, I don't think we have anyone better at the libero position this year, Pierce is a good change of scene player and offers good digging but not as good as Keeton at passing. Oh, I almost forgot, Keeton got aced several times against Minnesota, which I think is the reason coach Rose considered trying someone else. Definitely agree with your 2nd paragraph.

Definitely interesting to me. I could easily see the mistake being made by the author, but have a hard time seeing Rose not correcting the reporter in their interview. Unfortunately, we don't have questions asked for context (that I know of.) I feel that my volleyball expertise is lacking compared to other sports I watch, but I'm confident if coach thought there was someone better, the change would have been made sooner. I honestly think Pierce was a breath of fresh air but, given this article, I guess it's fair to wonder if this will be more than a "breath" or if a "breath" was just a breath. In my "i don't know nothin' about nothin'" opinion, Keeton's body language often makes her look worse than she actually is. Rose touches on that in the last part of the article. That combined with his "a few players are gassed" comments 10 days ago, I wonder if the extra rest & Keeton's technique won out over Kendall's energy & enthusiasm in practice this week.

In the prematch notes from the presser they refer to K. Pierce as the starting Libero for this weekend. That being said I'm sure Russ has a few cards he hasn't played.

I think this quote by coach Rose in that article is especially revealing as to the type of libero he covets: “That position [libero] is usually better served by a person who is really demonstrative and flashy."
