Curious but too lazy to research; wonder what PSU's best opponent hitting percentagje in a season? .160 going into this match is going to be difficult to top. In 2009, PSU hit .381 as a team and held its opponents to .112. You'd think that would be the best, but it isn't: in 2008, Penn State hit .390 as a team and limited its opponents to .089. (Note: I only went back to 2006).
Nice work Nyline, keeping flogging them Slackers. It's the only way to get any production out of them.
I'd be curious to know we are faring compared to some of those defensive-minded Nebraska teams who won it all.
It seems we match up better this year with that style, than with the offensive style of previous NC winning PSU teams.

I guess it would be too much to ask for an OH who could hit over .300. There is something sad when you say our players looked good but we still lost. Something is wrong and the coaches can't fix it.

There are two weeks remaining in the regular season. Where might we find one? In an obscure corncrib outside Papillion, Nebraska? PSU will finish the season with the players they have presently. Next year, new players will arrive, players will take over new responsibilities, and we'll see what happens. Back in 2010, Coach Rose recognized the growing parity in Division I volleyball. Do you think there's less parity today? I believe the coaching staff tries to get the best players available. Do you think any other of the 300+ D I teams don't try? Do you believe high school girls have free will--the ability and right to chose where they go? Why do we go through this after every defeat? We know how you feel. It seems as if you can't understand why the best players aren't playing for PSU. We've tried to tell you that a big driver might be the players themselves--they don't want to come to Happy Valley. Why don't we have Plummer? Let's not do this again, please.

Why don't we have Plummer? Let's not do this again, please. I hesitate to bring this up (for the last time, I promise). Having a child at Penn State at the time of Jerry Sandusky and friends, and being an alum myself, it will take a very, very long time to shed that stigma. I participate on a college forum, have for years. Prior to JS, no one had a bad thing to say about Penn State, other than it was expensive. The thread about Jerry Sandusky had more views and responses than I have ever seen before and they were universally against Penn State. Not just JS and JP, but everything and everyone. Now you have the scandal about that poor young pledge from NJ dying in a hazing situation. The lawsuit about that still continues. You should see the glee on the forums when Penn State gets "caught" doing something bad, people use it to prove their point that Penn State is an evil place run by the football program and an administration that refuses to change the "culture." I think in part, that is what is happening. My opinion only, of course.

Too lazy to look it up. But I'm not sure I remember even our AA OHs hitting much above .235, if that. Reason: they are often the only option available to the setter and they have to 'take the garbage out.' it kills their stats, but they keep us in the point. Our MBs always have impressive attack percentages because they seldom have the same responsibilities; when they get the ball it's often a set play when the setter had 2 or 3 options. We saw some of that with Hord last night looking like she was up there shooting fish in a barrel. The life of an OH, not so luxurious. Even when some of our OHs had career games in terms of Ks, it was on a staggering number of swings, more than anyone else on the team.

In 2009, Megan Hodge hit .371 and Blair Brown hit .347 for the season. Alisha Glass hit .482 (not an OH, with obviously fewer chances and generally the element of surprise). In 2010, Deja McClendon hit .331 and Blair Brown hit .320. In 2008 . . . . wait for it . . . . Blair Brown hit .426, Nicole Fawcett hit .358, Megan Hodge hit .349 and Alisha Glass hit .319.

Hodge was OH. BB was OPP, always. Glass was a setter. I'm only making the point about OH.
I believe McClendon and Courtney hit in middle .200s...again, too lazy...

bob 2061 "our coaches can't fix it"
It really isn't that "they" can't fix it, It is a long grueling process. Nia when she arrived as a freshman had a very poor swing and prep . The coaches worked with her and it took YEARS and many SWINGS to become routine.
Micha had some setting skills to improve but she proved to be capable faster because she worked on it with vigor and is an exceptional athlete.
The key as is so often true that the only one who can FIX it is the athlete themselves working vigorously to learn and adapt.
The head soccer coach at North Carolina told the press that Mia Hamm he often found working on her skills by herself at the earliest hour of day light: all alone and concentrating.
Again remember that 12 months ago most of our roster were still in the high school gym

A few things on my mind:
Taylor Leath is a very good volleyball player. Without her ability to play six rotations, we would be in serious trouble.
We are spoiled rotten. The current team is one of the top teams in the nation and seem under-appreciated. The 2008 team was the greatest ever and ultimately placed four starters on the United States world team at the same time! That is not going to happen again. There are an increasing number of competitive teams in the college ranks and they have significantly increased exposure on TV and internet. Additionally, there is far more exposure for the top high school talent and far fewer hidden gems.
It is true that this year's team does not have a real shot at the national championship and they will likely finish somewhere around 24-9. But the 2016 team finished at 24-10 and, with no significant additions to the roster in 2017, had a great shot at the national championship finishing at 33-2.
Finally, this is a fun team to watch. Their defense is entertaining. Obviously Kendall is a gamer and Jenna gets after it. Add in Bryanna's improved defense and Jonni's all out play (I hope no one missed the play at Northwestern where Bryanna dove toward the seats to keep the ball barely up and Jonni running parallel toward the seats reached out with her left arm and miraculously kept the ball between the antennae and onto the NW side of the court and ultimately won the set point for PSU) and you have some eye popping defense.
Bottom line, I think we should recognize the many positives of the Nittany Lions and enjoy the rest of this season's matches.

And yes, I did notice those amazing plays on that point (can someone find a video clip of that?).

Bottom line, I think we should recognize the many positives of the Nittany Lions and enjoy the rest of this season's matches. Agree entirely. I am having fun watching these ladies fight for every point. For example, how about Bryanna's "set" with her foot while lying on the floor? It is my belief that the expectations for this season are generally being met. Let us not forget where we were picked to finish in the B1G preseason coaches' poll. It is reasonable to hope that the team will keep improving and win some of these 5 setters. It is also reasonable to hope that the team will host the first two rounds and progress in the tournament this year. As was sagely pointed out by my friends on this site, next year, we shall find out what the young players have learned from the tests they have encountered this season. While Taylor, Nia and Bryanna will be missed, we shall also see what the incoming players bring to the table.

The more I think about this match the more optimistic I am. With so many freshman, and without a terminator, we were within 2 points in the fifth set of a good ILL team on their court. This is in spite of the fact that there are a lot of little things that need improving, (and if I had Coach Rose' opinion, probably some big things . I don't know if we'll challenge next year for the the NCAA title, considering that we're losing Nia Reed and Taylor Leath. But we definitely could be pretty close, depending on how quickly the 2019 freshmen develop and if the replacement for Leath on serve receive does well. Our defense will be better, our freshman will be better with another year and hopefully one of the OH hitters coming in next year will another terminator to add to Parker. As seeyajohn has said, we are definitely spoiled.
