This is an exceptional interview with Beau Bartlett, who finished 3rd at the NCAAs by winning both his matches today: I think this interview encapsulates why PSU wrestling does so good. First of all, PSU recruits good character guys. Secondly, Cael Sanderson and his coaches are nonpareil regarding their skill and ability to coach. Thirdly, the coaches take the pressure off the wrestlers when they compete by doing fun things (such as dodgeball). Cael Sanderson's belief is that wrestling is too hard to do if you don't have fun while doing it. (RR did the same thing when he was coaching). This allows the wrestlers to go out and do their best without feeling the "need" to do good. This is why PSU almost ALWAYS wrestles above their seed and most other teams wrestle below their seeds. For those who didn't watch the NCAA championship, on Friday morning/afternoon, Beau Bartlett, (141 lb weight class), got a takedown with 1 or 2 seconds to go in overtime to come from behind and win. Shane Van Ness, a red-shirt freshman at the 149 weight class, was down 7-3 going into the 3rd period. He then got an escape, a couple of takedowns and and a near fall and ended up winning 10-7. And to top it off, Levi Haines, a red-shirt freshman at the 157 weight class, got taken down and put on his back for a 6 pt move to start the match off. Levi was down 6-2 after a couple of escapes. He then got a couple of takedowns, gave up one escape to go into the third period down 7-6. He then gave up an escape, got another takedown and put his opponent on his back and pinned him. An unbelievable 3 matches in a row. SO much fun to watch. Actually, unlike Van Ness and Facundo, who both redshirted last year, Haines is a true freshman and still just eighteen years old.

My most hard-core Penn State PSU MBB fan friend, who is very knowledgeable, was soooooo excited for the future under Shrews. He is despondent over the hire of Mike Rhodes, who he says puts together very good defensive teams, but is terrible putting together good offenses. I hope he's wrong.
