Novakovic was not there. I looked for her on the sideline and in the timeout huddles.
A few hours before the match, she tweeted, "What doesn't kill me makes me stronger."
Obviously, something is up with her.

That was a rough one! Washington was on fire tonight which helped quite a bit! Was expecting a 3 set sweep which I still think we should have done. Frantti and Lee both hade a tough time getting kills without a bunch of hitting errors. Lee missing those cut shots tonight. Had to laugh a little during Michigan's last timeout in the 5th set. Washington got Thelen's hair in her mouth while in the huddle and she turned her head away from the huddle was spitting it out.

Obviously, something is up with her. Hope she is not thinking of leaving... I am sure it's hard on someone who was a star junior national team member not to play. I hope she redshirts this year and prove to everyone she belongs and become the next great Oh for PSU next year.

Washington got Thelen's hair in her mouth while in the huddle and she turned her head away from the huddle was spitting it out. let's look at the good side, beyond Heidi (kudos!)... late in the 4th, which had been fiercely contested, PSU bore down and ended it going away. they did not back off in the 5th, building a considerable lead immediately. and i believe our serving cranked up a notch late in the 4th and continued to pressure MI, although i don't have data to prove that. compared to the end of the match v. NW, i think the coaching decisions last night were more successful. e.g., starting the 5th set ro with Lainey P reset the dynamic and gave them a big boost. Lainey hadn't played much in the last couple matches. i don't know if it was a practice-based decision, but it looks to me like a critical choice in the match. we have such a deep DS bench with tough serves that it can be hard for the opposition to plan/understand all the potential receive situations, so coaches have lots of options. despite the dig stats (PSU out-dug 55-50), i did not feel that we defended the floor well...in part because the MI hitter Kiefer-Wright was just so surgical. i thought the defense looked way more impressive v. Purdue. and the error rate was much lower against Purdue. But if you rewatch sets 4 and 5, you'll feel better about how things went. No one panicked, they cut down on errors, and capitalized on a faltering MI.

Perhaps she became ill and just watched the match in her hotel room. She will definitely be a starter next year.

I would be reluctant to say any player not named Weiskircher or Frantti or Washington or Lee will "definitely" be a starter next year.

I hope your comments are based on some inside info or educated guess. They are not. Not sure why we are worried about a player that will not play this year. Because when we heard she signed and saw some of the highlight of her performances, some of us were looking forward to see what she can do at the US collegiate level. But, we have not seen anything at all of her and wonders if she is not as good as advertised or if there's something else going on. If she is not going to be the one, then we can move on. But, without seeing anything, just wondering why?

However keep in mind, underclassmen, especially those who may redshirt or are not getting playing time are constantly left behind due to travel numbers. Very common.

Good to know. I wish there's a definite announcement of Gorrell and Novakovic to be redshirted. I consulted team staff about redshirting rules because i could not find the rules on the Internet. Apparently the rule is that someone can be redshirted if they have not played. So it appears it's a game-by-game thing. in 2014, had Micha been injured (god forbid!), apparently coach could have inserted Weiskircher at any moment. as long as he did not have to resort to that, he could preserve her eligibility and consider her a red-shirt. So there is no requirement to announce and it becomes a retrospective thing / strategy. PSUMaui may have additional info to insert here...but that's what i learned.

PSU has a long way to go if their goal is to play at the level of the top teams, USC, Texas, Nebraska. They would not defeat any of them the way they played at Michigan. Hope they are just being conservative with Megan and we will see her back within a few weeks.

I don't know if it was said anywhere here but when I looked at the NET CAM of the Michigan match today, Courtney was no longer in the boot but walking in sneakers at the end of the match when she did her ritual touching both net poles after end of match!!
