Up to 21-7, the best third set PSU has played in a long time, maybe all year. Was looking great. Then to end up 25-17...I know some will rebut my concern, say we should be happy about a 3 set sweep on the road at a good team. as we should be. But if the standard is playing at the level of the top teams, PSU seemed to go soft for a while after 21-7 and MSU came back to score 10. Didn't past teams have more of a killer instinct in sets 3? Seems like they should have won 25-12, maybe 25-14. Yes, maybe they let up at the end a bit because they had such a large margin. Would have preferred if they finished them off quicker. You worry about how they will clinch a final set vs a better team with a smaller margin of points. Sure miss Micha, she had just enough of that good bit of "Nasty" where you knew PSU was going to close out a game. However, kudos to MSU for hanging in there at the end for 5 match points and not giving up. Usually, I would agree that they are lacking the "killer instinct" at the end of sets or matches, but they played much better than I expected, so I will just say congrats to the ladies tonight.

Yes, nyline, I think that is exactly what happened. Penn State was playing 'lights out' for the first part of Set 3, then relaxed a bit and MSU started playing the kind of volleyball they are capable of. (See Sets 1 & 2!)It's sweet beating a quality team like MSU at their place, after a tough 5-set match Wednesday night, also on the road. And they did it with Megan again.

I meant to type 'without' Megan.

Traveling, so didn't see any of the match -- therefore can comment totally unfettered by facts ☺ But is it possible that MSU simply had a horrible start to that set, and PSU had a great start, and in the last 14 points, both teams reverted to closer to the norm? Yes, you might be correct there. I only had an audio feed and was working while trying to follow the score. The reason I said that is because it seems PSU has been playing inexplicably poorly in the 3rd set this season. I'm waiting for PSUMaui to upload the game, hopefully :-), in order to see video and draw better conclusion.

The PSU write-up reads:
THE NITTANY LIONS OPENED THE THIRD SET ON AN 11-3 RUN TO TAKE CONTROL OF EARLY ADVANTAGE, PROMPTING MICHIGAN STATE TO CALL A TIMEOUT. PENN STATE CAME OUT OF THE BREAK WITH A PAIR OF CONSECUTIVE BLOCKS TO SPARK A 5-1 STREAK THAT PUSHED THE PSU LEAD INTO DOUBLE FIGURES, 16-4. THE SPARTANS LOOKED TO GET BACK ON TRACK WITH A KILL, 16-5, BUT AN ATTACK ERROR AND A KILL FROM LEE WIDENED THE NITTANY LION LEAD, 18-5, CAUSING MSU TO USE ITS FINAL TIMEOUT.
THE NITTANY LIONS CONTINUED TO CRUISE OUT OF THE BREAK, SURGING TO SET POINT, 24-12, WITHOUT LETTING THE ADVANTAGE DIP BELOW 10 POINTS. THE SPARTANS MADE ONE FINAL ATTEMPT TO MOUNT A COMEBACK, HOLDING OFF FIVE CONSECUTIVE MATCH POINTS ATTEMPTS BEFORE FRANTTI FINISHED OFF A 25-17 WIN IN THE THIRD SET WITH A KILL TO COMPLETE THE SWEEP.
They could have been in one of those bad rotations during that final 5-1 run...it happens. I'm just glad they had built a hefty margin.
Now, compare PSU v MSU to OSU v MSU. Even before the OSU setter was injured at the start of set 2, OSU had lost a set and was looking pretty scrambled. Wonder what this bodes for next week...

does the winner of the poll win anything? Assuming they voted before match started, yes: dinner with Tip and WiIlow (the cats of Nyline and Mrs. Nyline). They are very amiable, but they prefer kiblets to most anything else. p.s. Well done!

In the first set PSU went on a 7-0 run to start. MSU had 4 attack errors and PSU had 1 ace in that run. Both teams showed some good defensive as the match played on but struggled to terminate at times. I noticed that PSU is still suffering from lack of communication at times. Also, it seems that Weiskircher isn't feeding the middles enough. The Northwestern setter, Tashima, really got her offense going by feeding her middles early against PSU.

MSU certainly didn't help their cause hitting .099 with 24.....24 Hitting errors. They sided out at a miserable 44% in the 3 sets. PSU averaged a 56% sideout rate , which isn't stellar. Just a not a well played game offensively for either team. Glad we were on the winning end.

i know weiskircher is a freshman and all and looks to be really good down the road ..... but right now i think as a setter she leaves a lot to be desired.

Broerman's big complaint about Weis is that she was not back-setting effectively or precisely. she said Weis had to improve and that the OPP needed to feedback info better...
