Now that my first full season as a Lions fan is (sadly) over, I thought I would dip into the video juke-box and educate myself regarding previous Lions teams. I'll be starting with 1999 and working forward from there. It's tempting to go straight to the 2007-2010 glory years but there's no rush - I've got from after Saturday's Final to next August to slowly work through them. Am I in for a treat?

To the extent there are still "live" videos, you are in for a treat. Sadly, many video links died when various YouTube accounts were closed over the years for issues/alleged issues YouTube had with the account holders.

Just finished watching the 1999 Final - how TV technology has improved since then! Got the impression it was very much a (young) Russ Rose tactical masterclass, expertly executed by the hungry Lions. Had to smile at things that have changed since 1999 - white ball, 1st to 15 with scoring only on your own serve, no liberos, very few substitutions, referee with finger on net for every serve, very little aggression on serving. This was my era as my school teams were national champions in England in 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986 and 1990 but watching this 1999 final makes me realise how long ago that was. Here's a 1986 local newspaper photograph of my 1986 winners the day after their double win in London. (Not many smiles - we were all exhausted but had to drag ourselves into school the next day). These girls are in their 50's now! I'm still in touch with my 15U captain (no.12) who lives on the same estate as me.

Another huge difference compared with 1999 is that the first touch was subject to the same handling rules as the second and third. All serve and spike receives were digs. Rallies were shorter but the game was somehow cleaner. Also with no liberos, and only a max 6 substitutions, all players had to be able to play back court, so not so much specialism. Having said all that, the modern game is defintely faster and more exciting with many more long rallies so I would definitely say the game is a better spectacle than it was back in the 80's and 90's.

.....oh and coaches had to remain seated and were not allowed to coach in any way, except of course in time outs (max 2 per set). I received many warnings from referees for alleged coaching in between rallies!

An 8-year jump in time to the next match on the jukebox - the 2007 NCAA final v Stanford (again). I'm probably the only person on the forum who doesn't know who won, so no spoilers please!!

England, only thing I'll say is a much younger Karch Kiraly IIRC was one of the sportscasters and seemed to know everything about a Stanford OH's goggles...but nothing about Penn State. Hope you can enjoy.

Just finished watching the 2007 Final - what a great match. Megan Hodge was some player - did she go on to play for the USA? You could see how much it meant to the PSU players (and subs) as they got closer and closer to 15 in that final set. Sheer joy on their faces. But how laid back was coach Rose? Even when they clinched that last point, his only reaction was to make a note in his book! Of course, inside, he would have been ecstatic. What will it take to make him celebrate at least a little? Perhaps I'll find out in future videos.

I was in the crowd for the 2012 London Olympics semi final when the USA easily beat South Korea 3-0, so I would have seen Megan Hodge play. I've just dug out a couple of pictures that I took - can you see Megan?
