kudos to 8M for bringing up Cook's quote about Micha and Carlini The Big 10 and there never ending bias against Penn state gives setter of the year to Carlini when it was Micha and Penn state that led the nation in hitting. If that stat is not an indication of how good your setter is I don't know what is. Oh and just a side note I have yet to see any team fear Carlini walking to the service line. We Penn State fans know the job Micha did, but she had the last laugh and that one is the best to have

Don't know if it's true, but folks in the stands told me they saw Carlini curse out coach rose when he was commenting on her and her team after the Badgers' loss at the regionals in 2014. they told me you didn't need to be much of a lip-reader to figure out what she was saying. nonetheless, he was one of her biggest proponents in comments in the BIG network show on the PSU-WI match-up. But coach has always been a class act.

What I really liked about the 2008 team is they never let up no matter how big of a lead they had or if they were down a few points they always just concentrated on the next point. One of the Matches I remember well and unfortunately no longer have is the match 2008 with Minnesota where the then coach "Mike Hebert was asked between sets, "How do you stop Megan Hodge?" His response was while laughing and shaking his head "Send her out for coffee?" Also, remember Megan Hodge wearing cat eye contacts during Halloween Match.

Posters on VT were saying it was unsportsmanlike (a distraction). I thought they were just being catty.

I can't imagine he said anything insulting about her or Wisconsin in his comments. He always compliments and plays up the other team and its players.

she apparently was acting out after the loss. he was praising her when she reportedly responded unkindly.

she apparently was acting out after the loss. he was praising her when she reportedly responded unkindly. Very interesting comment. That was the game she got injured in, if I'm not mistaken. She stepped on someone's foot under the net. Perhaps she was acting out of frustration. A lot of these top players are super competitive and say things in the heat of game, which they normally wouldn't say. I can only imagine that she sees Penn State as her mortal enemy, since PSU was the team which prevented WI from winning a NC twice. She said she wanted to win multiple NC's when she got to WI; I think she should have joined PSU to do that.

That's certainly a possibility. That and the loss. It wouldn't be behavior I would condone, but I don't think we should pounce on it or draw any large conclusions regarding it (whatever it actually was). My question would be: would I want Lauren Carlini on my team? Yes. Decidedly yes.

Going back to the original topic, here's some additional info to consider. I just watched highlights of the Long Beach vs PSU championship game of 1998. Wow did PSU come close to winning that one. I totally forgot that they had sideout scoring back then. So serving played a huge part in the game. Also, the serve couldn't touch the net and games/sets only went to 15 points. Finally, they used rally scoring in the fifth set, which I didn't know and PSU was up 7-2 at one point.
Trivia fact - Both teams were undefeated with a record of 35-0 that year before entering the final match, so the winner was guaranteed to go down in the record books as the first undefeated National Champ.
