This is a fair assessment. I think we might have had better results to this point with a “normal” preseason for coach and players to work on the best mix of players and team chemistry. However, the other top echelon teams, Stanford aside, have adjusted to this crazy season much better than us. Also, with a core of four starting juniors, three of them returning AAs with three years as starters, I don’t know if I would say this is a young team. That seems like a convenient excuse. Agreed that we do have three freshman with a lot of court time and to their credit, while they are having some freshman moments, they are also making great contributions (e.g., Holland vs OSU, AC and Kudrashova). I don’t think it’s fair to shoulder the poor team results on them. It is time for the core group of juniors to step up and lead this turnaround. Also, the coaches need to stabilize recruiting (and transfer portal) so that we don’t have to rely on so many freshman to have to contribute so early.
Let’s all hope that Coach can get this figured out and turned around this season. I don’t accept yet that this is a transition year. We are Penn State and this program needs to continue its foundation of excellence and perform at the highest levels of competition.
