well, after my whining about the non-middle hitters for PSU, Rollins and Parker made a liar out of me by hitting .333 & .341 respectively. Nice to see.

I think that Allie & Kaitlyn are two of the best middles around regarding blocking and also recognition of quick sets out of the middle and also dumps by the setter on a 2nd ball. They had some nice touches tonight, not allowing the setter to do too much regarding setter dumps. They are fun to watch.
I remember getting frustrated watching Haleigh Washington when she was at PSU in that she was so athletic but didn't seem to read the opposition setter very well regarding sets and dumps. Boy has she improved since then. She was really fun to watch during the Olympics.

Really nice to see how PSU came thru in the last 5-8 points of the 2nd and 3rd set. They haven't always been that good in the clutch.

One thing to remember is that MINN was without Taylor Landfair, who's a 6'5" OH. She can be good, but is somewhat inconsistent. Her replacement played pretty good, so that may or may not have made a difference. But, still swept MINN in MINN which hasn't been done by PSU since 2014.
Miyabe hit .324 with 14 kills. I think she cooled off in the 3rd a bit. It felt like she was hitting .500 most of the match. PSU couldn't seem to block her to save their lives.
PSU only had 4 blocks in the match which is considerably under their average and MINN had 5. PSU hit .356 and MINN hist .289 so it wasn't exactly a defensive gem by either side. Not sure why that was. Was good floor defense on either side of the net.

As I thought about tonight’s (admittedly delightful) match, a couple of observations came to mind.
This is the second time that Adanna Rollins played like an All-B!G player. Perhaps it was that she was particularly motivated playing against her ex-teammates. But one can hope that she can produce that same fire on a regular basis for the rest of the season.
I noticed that Cassie Kuerschen did not play at all and that no defensive specialist played a single point in the first or third sets when they were not the server. I suspect that this was because Rollins and Starck were having exceptional receiving and passing nights. Only Russ knows for sure!
Early in the second set Minnesota took a 5-1 lead scoring the fifth point on a receiving error by Adanna. At that point Russ inserted Maddy Bilinovic for Adanna. Maddy played for 4 points until the score reached 2-8 and Adanna returned. Late in that set Maddy subbed in for Adanna to serve and then played defense through the three points that Jenna served before being replaced by Adanna. Maddy was the only defensive specialist to play when not serving during the entire match.
There was some interesting libero serving going on during set 2. But, I decided to address that in the thread where that topic was covered.

Just noticed an "interesting" stat from the match. MINN had 7, yes 7, different players with assists, which shows that their passing weren't so hot. PSU only had 4 different players (and one of those was a pass by Starck to Gabby who dumped it over the net for a point), which shows that PSU passing was pretty good. Jenna again, had 7 assists, which, considering that PSU doesn't have any OH hammers, is pretty impressive and shows that her assists are of a pretty high quality. CC McGraw, for MINN, only had 3 assists. From what I've seen, an average libero, will only have 3-4 assists. So for Jenna to have 7 is pretty good. (I know, I have too much time on my hands.)

I am pleasantly pleased to see the ladies win this match against a tough opponent on the road. Now they have to face the cheese-heads and hopefully carry that momentum with them.

I suspect that this was because Rollins and Starck were having exceptional receiving and passing nights. Only Russ knows for sure! Thanks for the info. Very interesting. Makes me wonder if assuming that Cassie would be the next libero is a bit premature. Or, maybe she's injured or under the weather. It's nice to see Starck continuing to develop. Hopefully, her hitting will also develop and can become a real offensive weapon in time for the NCAA tournament. Her hitting percentage is still hovering around .100, but obviously RR feels that she has the capability to develop into a better player or he wouldn't continue to play her. I think that with the experience she's getting in match play she will develop into a hitter that will be quite good. Also, knowing RR, she must be practicing at a pretty high level or she wouldn't continue to be playing. It's also nice to see another player come along with a pretty high volleyball IQ. It's been a while since PSU has had two players that could play around and receive well and play good defense. Hopefully this will continue. This also gives RR more options with his substitutions as he doesn't need to put in DS's for receiving and defensive purposes.

Very encouraging match. But as to Minnesota. Every year I expect they will be really good, like final four good, and they never seem to meet those expectations. I wonder if Samedy is questioning her decision to come back to Minnesota rather than playing professionally
