Rose has often spoken in the past about his friendship with Joe Paterno, so it is frustrating that he seems not to recognize that he is making the same fundamental mistake that Paterno made, which is staying too long. Not only has recruiting slipped, but several excellent candidates to succeed him have gotten tired of waiting and left. This doesn't address your main point, and I realize you didn't mention her, so you may well already know this, but Salima would have been an excellent candidate, but she left coaching for personal reasons, not because she got tired of waiting. As to your main point, people will form their own conclusions. Personally, I think Coach Rose has earned the right to go out on his own terms. I don't think the performance in the past two seasons should be the measuring stick -- remember, in 2017, Penn State was a stumble from Abby Detering into Heidi Thelen away from going to the NCAA Championship. I was there, on press row, with the play right in front of me. Granted, that's four years ago, but only a handful of teams have reached that level in those four seasons.

That was not my intention, nor my understanding of what you were saying.

I can't help myself. I have to put in my 2 cents. I think Coach Rose has the team playing up to their potential. I agree there are other teams in the B1G who are out-recruiting Penn State and out-recruiting virtually every other team in the country. As a PAC-12 fan I acknowledge the B1G has pulled far ahead of the PAC-12.
Just one note: The grass does not always turn out to be greener on the other side of the fence. This is from my experience as a Stanford fan. The previous Coach, Dunning, was a high school math teacher who never played competitive volleyball in his life. Now we have a coach whose team IMO is drastically under-performing.

Russ can disparage the effort of the team all he wants. But the fact is that PSU has been out recruited by the very top teams for several years now. Despite the addition of a couple quality transfers, this year's team was outgunned against five B1G opponents. It was my recollection that the current Senior class was very highly regarded when they came in. Moreover, the talent was sufficient to beat Minn earlier this year. So I share Coach's concern that this group struggles to hold leads or close out sets and makes errors at critical times. I have no idea why this has been such an issue this season but I am not so certain the issue is insufficient talent.

Presumably you are not suggesting the John Dunning should have been forced to continue coaching?
But seriously, I think we're agreed Rose can (and will) stay as long as he wants. My feeling is that he will continue to produce good, but not championship level teams (Big 10 or NCAA) and leave Penn State as a high mid-pack program long after his departure.
Now if we could only get a booster to step up and buy out Franklin's new contract (and Barbour's as well).
