I would have preferred a quick win, but it's really good to see that this team has the grit to fight back and win. A huge win against a very solid team. Kentucky has an excellent setter and very fundamentally sound in receiving and defense. I think our ladies believed in themselves throughout and trusted each other. This is a kind of game that PSU were not able to overcome in the recent years, but this teams looks much more confident. Even though there were anxious moments, our ladies were just super in defense and their determinations. Round of applause to them!

So I predicted a PSU sweep. But I did not imagine that the team would be put off their game by what was a very good defensive team. Importantly they found a way and so when they run into another frustrating opponent they won't be as affected. The announcers were helpful in pointing out that the coaches were on the team to snap out of it. Something we could not really see on tv.
So-our Opposites need to score a little, Jess has to hit closer to normal and Anjelina needs to swing away when she gets the rare opportunity. But Izzy got Taylor going and the middles figured out the KY offense in sets 4 and 5, and Ms. Hannah beat up the defenders as she has all season. Maybe we will look smoother against Ball St and end up no. 3 in the Poll?

Thank you Penn State Women's Volleyball for avenging the Football Team's terrible loss to Kentucky at the 2019 Citrus Bowl.

I was just thinking about this match and was impressed that PSU found a way to win in spite of Jess and Caroline having bad nights. The serve receive/passing improved enough that Izzy was able to atart setting Taylor a lot (12-2-23 .435). Jess only hit .132 (15-8-53). Izzy herself hit .364 (5-1-11).
I would have thought that Katie would have given caroline more of a chance (1-3-5 -.400). Only 5 attempts. I was gonna say that why not let Caroline play if Markley wasn't gonna get the attempts either (0-0-3 .000), but neither of them blocked worth spit either. So I guess that was a wash. Both players had 1 block assist; that almost seems impossible, especially since PSU had 8 blocks in the 4th and 5th sets.
Anyway, we knew that PSU wouldn't alway have nights like they did against Louisville, just didn't realize that it would be the next game.
It does make you wonder what was with the team tonight; they really didn't have much enthusiasm for a large portion of the match. Hey, they won. All teams are gonna have nights like this at some time during the season. NEB already had one of their own against SMU.
From what little I know about SMU, they seem like they are the 2024 version of the 2022 Univ of San Diego team that Gabby Blossom was on; a bunch of transfers such that this year (probably only this year) they're gonna be a really good team. (Tho SMU only beat San Diego State 3-1 when they beat NEB 3-0).

Stats after 5th set _________PSU __KY Hitting____.264___.189 Blocks____14___9 Serve errs__15___16 Aces______6___9 Kills______62___56 Digs______69___55 Interesting that after hitting near .230 most of the night, KY ended up hitting .189 overall, mostly due to a dismal -.105 hitting percentage in the 5th set (3-5-19). I think that that is the highest hitting percentage that PSU has allowed this year, but it ain't very good. The most KY hit in the various games was .244; whereas PSU hit .333, .257, .471 in the 3rd, 4th and 5th sets respectively.

There was an interesting adjustment to the rotations in sets 4 and 5. I think Katie switched her M1 and M2. Where Taylor had been in the M1 position for the first three sets (and for the previous matches against Tennessee and Louisville), she was moved to the M2 spot for the last two sets against Kentucky. Maggie played in the M1 spot for the last two sets.
I'm not sure of the motivation for the change. But, it put Izzy in the front row with Taylor for two of the three rotations where Taylor played. Looking at it another way, Taylor was the middle for two of the three rotations where Izzy was in the front row.
I don't know if the change was the reason or not. But Taylor went on a rampage for the last two sets!

So weaknesses exposed, lots of inconsistency and losses by the top teams. Florida lost tonight and so did Minn. As you say, the trick is to find a way to win while playing sub optimally. PSU played three ranked teams-two on the road, yet it seems others had even tougher schedule

Not only did Taylor start scoring on gaps in front of the setter, but the blocking suddenly got better too.
