If Oregon can close tonight that would be three big teams in sweet 16 ( wisky Purdue , Oregon ) with the two 1s going tommorrow ( psu Nebraska)

There was a play in the 5th Set of the Marquette - Utah match, with the score 3-2 Marquette, and Marquette serving. Utah had a bit of trouble with the serve and sent a free ball over to Marquette, which was handled by Marquette's setter (with the lovely sounding last name "Anchante"), who passed to her outside hitter. So far, so normal. But then, Marquette's OH, who was facing a Utah Rightside who already had 8 blocks in the match, suddenly pivoted to her right and set the ball to Marquette's MH, who "flushed it" (in the words of the announcer) for a Marquette point.
I don't ever recall seeing a play like that. Has anybody else?
As an aside, I think it was an illegal attack by Marquette's MH, because the set by Marquette's OH actually went over the net to Utah's side, so Marquette's MH was definitely reaching over the net with her attack. Apparently, Utah's bench noticed that on the scoreboard replay, but there wasn't a challenge (not sure if that is a no-call that can be challenged), and the game moved on.

Referees, even the best referees, are creatures of habit. The over-the-net call is "usually" seen when a blocker gets aggressive on an opponent's pass near the net. R1 missed this call and R2 missed and didn't help the R1. The rule change allowing double contacts when passing to a teammate probably helped Marquette successfully make this play. If Utah player touches the ball before Marquette MH, wonder if the double contact would have been whistled. My opinions only. I did not see this play. Referees have a lot to decipher in split seconds.

I "believe" that an over the net call, or a back row attack by the back row setter, isn't a call that can be challenged. It's a judgement call and typically there isn't a, or enough, camera angles to base a challenge on.

I'm putting this here as I'm not sure where else to put it. I just happened to notice that ESPN+ had the Juniata vs Hope Div 3 semi-final on Thursday night. I decided to watch it because Juniata is coached by Heather Pavlik, who is the wife of Mark Pavlik, the coach of the PSU men's volleyball team. Also, Juniata was on a 94 match win streak. They last lost in 2022 and have won 3 Div 3 championships in a row. Hope, who lost to Juniata in the 2023 Div 3 championship by a sweep, came out sky high. They were really fired up and won the 1st set easily, 25-18. They then won the next set, which was a bit closer, 25-22 going up 2-0. Juniata then started to wake up and won the 3rd set 25-20. Juniata really got their bus in motion in the 4th set and won easily 25-15. So it comes down to the 5th set, which was, by the way, the first time Juniata had gone to 5 sets since Sept 2022, so it's not like Juniata was used to it (unlike MINN ). The fifth set was very even with the score 9-8 in favor of Juniata. But then, Juniata went on a 5-0 run to put the match away. However, Hope didn't go quietly. They scored 3 straight points to bring the score to 14-11, but then Juniaga was able to score the final and deciding pt to win 15-11. It was a really good match. The defense was excellent by both sides. The quality of play was very high. You could see the difference from DIV 1 play in that there wasn't the killer attacks that you see by some players in DIV 1, BUT, it was a very entertaining match. The final is tonight, on ESPN+, at 4:00 PM est, if anyone wants to watch it. I plan on it. Juniata is in their 11 championship match, and is going for their 5th championship. It's amazing that a DIV 3 team can be this good for a long period of time, as there are no scholarships in DIV 3. There are however many opportunities for academic scholarships. A personal item of note for myself; the setter for Juniata, Olivia Foley, is from Coldwater MI, which is in lower MI, and is 1/2 hour drive from where I grew up in Sturgis MI, where my family lived when I was 4-10 years old.

Juniata now has a three-peat, going 5 against Wisconsin-Whitewater. When the search was on for Rose's replacement, I mooted Heather Pavlik, but no one else seemed to share my enthusiasm. But I am very happy with the selection that was made!
