On a more positive note.
PSU Women's Field Hockey (ranked #18) downed #9 Albany by a score of 3-1 today. Last week PSU defeated #5 Virginia and #20 Old Dominion. Penn State opens the season at 4-0 for the first time since 2003 and for the 13th time in program history.

PSU moves up to #5 spot in this week's rankings (up from #18) and received 8 first place votes. Pretty impressive considering last year they didn't make the tournament of 16 teams (actually 18; there was a pre-tourney play-off). PSU has been to the final twice, in 2002 and 2007 and lost both times. They have a very talented group this year and a great goalkeeper, keep an eye out for them, they could go far.
FYI - I started following field hockey a few years ago, by watching the US national team play in international tourneys. I realized that more than half the players on the team were from PA; I've been a fan since. This year at the Olympics they had their best group play record ever; 4 wins and 1 loss for 2nd place. They recently built a national team training center in PA; which is a huge, since they used to train in CA.

PA has always had an enormous amount of field hockey talent. The national team is usually comprised of many PA players; sometimes, most are PA players. Unfortunately for Penn State, most of the best players did not stay home and went to ACC schools. If we could keep the talent at home, we'd be to field hockey what the U. of North Carolina is to women's soccer.

Some more challenges coming up... On 9/16 vs # 16 Iowa On 9/23 vs #15 Northwestern On 9/25 vs #8 Michigan.
As of today's poll, PSU is now ranked #4 with 7 first place votes. Not too shabby.
EDIT: October has some good matches to watch out for as well... On 10/02 vs #10 Princeton On 10/08 vs #11 Wake Forest ON 10/16 vs #7 Maryland.

Sept. 16, 2016 --> #4 PSU rallies on the road for a 4-3 win over #16 IOWA. PSU started a comeback in the 1st half, after being down 0-3, to end the half 1-3. Then in the 2nd half, they scored 3 unanswered points to win the match 4-3. This team has some real grit.
The Lions have now equaled the second-best start to a season in program history at 7-0, equaling the start of the 2002 season.

How's the soccer team doing? They're doing good, I'd say tied for top team in the B1G along with Minnesota (whom they tied 1-1 on Friday). They are missing 3 defensive players and 1 midfielder (all starters on last years team) to the U-20 Women's World Cup. All those players took a redshirt year. Lots of young players have stepped in this year trying to settle into their positions. Team is still solid, but it'll take a few more games to work out the kinks. We picked up 2 really good international players in August, so when our woso team gels, I think they can be dangerous in the tourney.

Up and down weekend for the WFH team (or should I say down and up). Anyway, the Lions suffered their first loss of the season by a score of 5-3 to #11 Northwestern on Friday (9/23/16). Today (9/25/16) PSU defeated #8 Michigan 3-1 (all things are right again ; our record is now 9-1.
