Where do you think Penn State will land in today's AVCA Poll? Vote in the poll, and add your own top 5 (or whatever). I'm guessing #5. Weigh in

Just surprised that we beat Stan 2x and are ranked behind...and they didn't look good in 5 sets v unranked CO yesterday.
Oh, well, tied w/MN for 3rd....wondered if they'd find parity for us.

That really is odd -- but the AVCA poll often is characterized by "odd." Maybe the thought process (if that isn't gilding the lily) for some voters was "Stanford is better than Nebraska. Nebraska beat Penn State. The two matches between Stanford and Penn State were closer than the Nebraska match against Penn State. Ergo, Stanford is better than Penn State."

Coach Rose:
Florida 1 Minnesota 2 Wisconsin 3 Penn State 4 Stanford 5 Washington 6 Nebraska 7 Texas 8 BYU 9 Michigan State 10 Kentucky 11 Oregon 12 Kansas 13 Creighton 14 UCLA 15 Utah 16 Purdue 17 Iowa State 18 San Diego 19 Florida State 20 Southern California 21 Michigan 22 Colorado 23 Illinois 24 Ohio State 25
based on this, I'd say he still believes we should have beaten NE on Friday, and that he has noted OSU's sudden show of strength.

He doesn't sugarcoat things. His rankings give me hope.

We definitely should have beaten NE on Friday. He had a game plan but that plan wasn't executed. I remember his statement about them putting a game plan together during the playoffs and if they executed that plan they should win but also said that the team has to buy into that game plan in order for it to work. I hope that Russ has his coaches better prepare the team this coming weekend against Illini and Northwestern.

Based on Friday night's press conference, I am certain Coach Rose and the staff share your hope.

I figured that this would happen even though I predicted they would be below Penn State, the voters like Stanford better (it's their personal "feelings"). Has nothing to do with who is better. They just needed an excuse to put Stanford above Penn State and last weekend was their chance. As for Stanford, they don't have a cakewalk thru conference play. They play Utah which when they play at Utah, it's kinda like playing in Iowa (football). Very tough to get a win there (I think it's the altitude) and the Uts are ranked this season but lucky for Stanford they only play them once and at home. They get to play Washington twice this year so those matches would be interesting to watch and then there are the two unpredictable teams of UCLA and USC.

And to beat a dead horse, MN lost to AN UNRANKED team. PSU lost to #14. Whisky was punished more harshly for losing to the same team MN lost to. Not that i have a problem w/Wisky being punished.

Stanford always gets preferential treatment in the minds of voters, for whatever reason.

All three rankings still have us at #2 (Pablo, RPKI and Rich Kern). Should we win both matches this weekend, I think this is where the 1st RPI ranking will have us at, which would be fine with me.
Other teams rankings
Rich Kern Pablo RPKI
Florida 1 3 1 Stanford 3 5 10 MN 4 1 3 TX 5 6 5 WA 6 8 4 NE 7 7 13
The 4 that voted Stanford #1 which put them above Penn State and MN was:
Melissa Batie-Smoose (Holy Cross) Rose Shires (Omaha) Toby Rens (Maryland Eastern Shore) Ray Gooden (Northern Illinois)
Penn State vote came from:
Tim Horsman (Dayton)
Minnesota vote came from:
Karen Chisum (Texas State)

Here is something to ponder. We will never know what would have happened had Florida played Michigan State because it wasn't re-scheduled due to the hurricane.
