We served much tougher this match. Way better than against NE. Washington got more chances this match. Looked much better than last weekend when we played the 1st set. Still have issues on the back defense and lack of block touches. Too many holes in the back. Gotta clean that up. Also need to communicate better on the court when going for the ball. Too many mental errors which lead to easy points for IL.

I haven't seen the match yet. I only listened to it. But it seems strange that PSU hit..337 against one of the strongest blocking teams in the B1G and folks here were not happy with the performance! Illinois only hit .200 against, what is being described as, a weak back row performance.
I'm anxious to see the game because it sounded like our serve receive went well and theirs did not!
Also of some interest is that Russ switched the positions of Franti and Lee.

I guess they gave it the "college" try though.

I had the feeling IL used the NE playbook for attacking our back row, and even if the stats don't show it, it felt very dangerous, especially in set 1. We repeatedly had 2 players diving for balls and neither getting there. Back in the day, that didn't happen so much.
Yes, yay to our serving.
Also, yay to our gumption. i didn't see faces with that stricken oh sh**t look. From the computer screen at least, they looked composed and determined.
Here's my question: all those points we gave up hitting into their block: who needs to do better: setter or hitters?

Here's my question: all those points we gave up hitting into their block: who needs to do better: setter or hitters? Both. And better passing can always help. I think we're fortunate to have caught them so easily in the first two sets.

I guess I saw a different game. Felt floor game was much improved and that in the fist set our attack choices were appropriate. Not sure why Washington gets 6 kills in the first and then only 5 in the next two sets with little difference in the passing. As for avoiding blocks, get serious they had some strong blocking skills and we did not let that whip us. These kids need a more appreciative audience than is posting here.

- I think our receiving was very good last night, especially Lee, a high percentage of her passes were right on target. - Because of the PTSD from other team's setter dump, I paid special attention to that during the game. Gorrell did a very good job shadowing their setter when she's in the front row. She was very aware of the possible attack from setter and I think the only time their setter tried to dump the ball Gorrell blocked it right back. Very good on that end. - Back row defense still has room to improve. - I feel bad for their #7, it gave me some bad memories from past couple of years when we had to sub out Frantti because she got everything blocked.

Great point about Gorrell....I think I only saw one dump or roll, if that, that succeeded against us. Much better awareness than v. NE!!
An observation about our tough serving: when we don't get an Ace, but our tough serves get them out of system w/shanked passes etc., it's amazing how NE and in set 3(?) IL were able to recover, often w/a K. When I started watching NCAA DI in 2007, PSU opps never could have run down those balls and turned them into attacks. Speaks not just to parity but also to overall improvement in the game. Exciting if you're not partisan, but dangerous if you care who wins!
