It's a third set curse, or something like that. Sets won by set 1 2 3 4 5 Total Penn State 20 20 15 8 3 66 Opponents 3 3 8 1 0 15 It's hard to complain with a 22-1 record, but PSU has most of their set losses in the third. If we take away the three sets lost to Nebraska, the third set hiccup stands out even more. Maybe the other team's coaches have been inspirational, maybe the team lets up. I'm sure Coach Rose hasn't missed this. Lights out Theory Baltimore Ravens were leading the San Francisco 49ers 28-6 when most of the lights in the 73,000-seat building went out with 13:22 left in the third quarter of the Super Bowl The game won by the Ravens in a 34-31 thriller!

I'm sure Coach Rose hasn't missed this. Has to be some combination of both. If we are up 2-0 (and almost always have been), the opponents lift their play a little, and our intensity drops a little. One other point, the scores against MSU were pretty close and three of the four sets could have gone the other way. For example, the third set last night could have been won by PSU. One untimely boo boo by either team determines who wins those deuce sets.

I'm still trying to figure out how the Falcons crumbled last year with all the lights on.

So I am again marveling at the staff's choices last evening. Pretty much every selection they made worked really well.
I have to wonder how they select which player to act in what capacity on a given night. Against MSU, we saw Lainy Pierce serve better than she has so far this year, in place of Haleigh Washington who's serve has been notably tough all season. Maybe Pierce showed the improved serve in practice? Tortorello pointed out that in addition to serving, PSU would benefit from better back row defense with the sub.
Also, the DS choices worked really well. But we have other specialists who also did well earlier this season. How did they know who to use? Maybe Pierce's Senior experience makes her a better choice over Sciorra in a tight match. Whatever it was, Pierce put herself in the right places and executed well in several long rallys.
Kudos to BTN for a good broadcast. We got to see some nice replays, and the announcers pointed out a number of technical issues which for the most part enhanced my enjoyment.

Watching the match video (thanks PSUMaui!!) and observe that Pierce came in for Lee in set 1 with team down by 3 points. In previous matches wasn't that Holcomb's job?

Watching the match video (thanks PSUMaui!!) and observe that Pierce came in for Lee in set 1 with team down by 3 points. In previous matches wasn't that Holcomb's job? Pierce was the primary DS serving and playing back row through the first 3 weeks of the season but once Holcomb was ready she took over that role. Lainy has been a primary serving sub since then. She was subbed out after the 3 pt run ending with a net violation on our side in game 1. Crucial Ace indeed. Holcomb serves and stays in often for Frantti in the backrow at least 1 time or sometimes for Lee like in game 2 and 3 when Simone was struggling. Pierce had effective serves in game 1 and 2 not sure about 3. Holcomb had a ineffective game 3 and we lost that huge lead. Coach felt Lainy was the hot hand and brought her in for Holcomb role in game 4 and she stayed in for that whole backrow rotation. My take = its nice to have 2 DS that the coaches and team have confidence in to do multiple roles. Our bench seems ready for a NC run.

What did Coach think about last night?
it's in the twitter feed for which i don't think you actually need twitter. alternatively,
go to gopsusports.com homepage; select multimedia; select LionVision; select Coach Franklin show on demand... rebroadcast of today's radio show. Coach Rose shows up at about 4:45 in and goes on more than 10 minutes.
highlights include: how good he thought White was last night; why MSt was such a tough opponent; are we getting better (answer: tougher); are we getting smarter (answer, that's what the scouting is about, so some of the players might want to pay attention to that); and, as they say, much, much more... Rutgers; post-season; recruiting...

Steve Jones really does a great job. Coach was his usual candid self. Thanks for the heads up about this interview.

terriffic and candid interview.
Coaches Grind traditional mentality vs other coaches/trainer/modern approach of tapering practices and touches this time of year.
-still have 7 + 6 hopefully matches left
-balancing and managing the 3 weeks of Wed Saturday matches and travel in between. Keeps them sharp playing wise imo but can have a cummualtive tiring effect.
-re-emergence of Pierce? -emergence of Reed as option?
- continued concern of health and limitations from the bench and lack of sustained options there.
- continued excellent play from Frantti,Lee, Thelen and ridiculously good from White and Washington.
- discussion of rareness of this 6-2 for Russ.
-overall physicalness of the B1G and our "toughness" to push back hard is a welcomed sight.
anything else I missed.?

I was amused by the host's comment about Washington being a bookworm, and he gets confused by her sometimes, but he does not get confused by Simone Lee... It would be fun to hang out with these ladies sometime, and feel their personalities off the court...

I thought he was saying Simone gets confused by all of the books Haleigh reads. But I wasn't sure. I should probably listen again.

I was struck by his response that there are very few players he "trusts" and that he does not trust all of the players who are presently on the court. I guess never being satisfied is what makes him so successful.

I guess never being satisfied is what makes him so successful. Although, in life, society, workplace and even family we all have but a small handful or less in each of those situations that we may "Truly" trust to get a very important job done properly. Doesnt mean we dont like or love em..... 😁. Or maybe he's just messing with his players heads......and now ours. Honestly I dont really Trust NYline to get it right most of the time....thats why I bypass and go to Mrs. NYLine. 😎
