So, assuming we end up with a 9-1 record after the 3 matches this weekend (vs Howard, Buffalo, and American), what do you predict our season ending record will be?
After this weekend, we will have played 10 matches and have 20 remaining conference matches; I'm listing all them below.
I think our team has looked good so far, and I expect they will improve as the season wears on. Of course, other teams will improve as well.
My original prediction on Volleytalk last month was a season ending record of 24-6.
I'm not so sure any more. I think we could end up with a better record, like 25-5 (assuming we split wins with the better teams).
Big10 Conference Schedule 9/19/2018 at Minnesota 9/22/2018 at Ohio State 9/28/2018 at Michigan State 9/29/2018 at Michigan 10/5/2018 vs. Maryland - HOME 10/6/2018 vs. Ohio State - HOME 10/10/2018 at Purdue 10/13/2018 vs. Nebraska - HOME 10/17/2018 vs. Rutgers - HOME 10/20/2018 at Rutgers 10/26/2018 vs. Indiana - HOME 10/27/2018 vs. Purdue - HOME 11/2/2018 at Nebraska 11/3/2018 at Iowa 11/9/2018 at Northwestern 11/10/2018 at Illinois 11/14/2018 vs. Michigan - HOME 11/17/2018 vs. Northwestern - HOME 11/23/2018 vs. Minnesota - HOME 11/24/2018 vs. Wisconsin - HOME

I like that thinking only because the last four are at home.

Millenium, I share your optimism, but I will remind that EVERYONE raises their game when playing perennial powerhouse PSU. I think 24-6, per your original thinking, is closer to the mark. I cringe to consider how bad it could get this year, when even Russ Rose has our ladies no better than #5 in B1G right now. That's a tough criticism to overcome. I guess we'll see. I hope you're right.

I'm just trying to figure out where are losses would be coming from. Look at the schedule and tell me which matches you see PSU losing? It's not simple optimism that's driving my logic here.
I just don't think Nebraska will sweep us in both matches this year. Also, I think we split with Minnesota, but it will be a struggle.
Wisconsin is the big question mark for me and we play them once (at home) on the last day of the regular season.
Quite frankly, their coach doesn't scare me, and I think the teams are an extension of their coaching.
We could lose to Illinois on the road, so I think we have 5 losses (assuming we lose to Wisconsin and split the other top Big10 teams).
Statistically we could lose to lose one more match, perhaps Purdue, but I don't think they look that good. Hence, my arrival at 5 probable losses. The 6th loss, in my book, is more a statistical CYA.

We'll, I'm all about statistical CYA, so I'm going with 24-6. But 25-5 is certainly possible.

The thing I worry about is the freshman. Not their ability, but the length of the season. I'm thinking that there will be at least one loss that is unanticipated probably two. I remember Coach Rose talking about the freshmen in the 2010 season where he said the finals was the first match that all three had been 'on'. I think that this team has some good leadership so hopefully this will help them avoid the losses to teams that they should not lose to. I'm also 'twice shy' about Nebraska. I'm beginning to wonder if Penn State will ever beat them again .

I just hope the freshman don't fizzle out, Since they are not accustomed to playing a long season like this.

The roof is not yet on fire.... I'll stick with the "pessimistic" 23-7 I originally was thinking. This team is very talented and has plenty of opportunities to right the ship. The Michigan trip will be very telling, but if no-one was expecting to lose @ a very good OSU team in Columbus, this could be a long season for PSU. We will have to watch and learn this team's identity. Just my 1/17 of $0.33.

I'm hoping you're right. If Reed helps this team defeat Michigan on Sunday. I'll stick to my original 24-6 prediction. Without Reed, we are losing more than 10 matches.

Actually, my belief is that "too much Leath" (over-rated player on a subpar team, in a mediocre conference - UNC in ACC) had a bigger impact than "not enough Reed." Based on PSU's past scouting success, I'm inclined to think nearly any of these Freshmen can outperform Leath. As tall as she is, she is in love with the soft/dump shot, when she should be lining up to ram the ball every swing, with the OCCASIONAL off-speed shot. Our opponents EXPECT her to lay the ball over the net and they are prepared to defend it, as if she were a foot shorter. At least, that's my observation.

I know a former club teammate of Leath's who told me months ago that we would probably be disappointed.

Of course teams are serving her constantly, which makes it harder for her to prep for attack.

I know a former club teammate of Leath's who told me months ago that we would probably be disappointed. Who is disappointed? Not me. She is carrying a big load. So last night Leath showed the full array of shots, received fairly well and continues to be a steadying presence. As our young players do better, so will she because the weight she has to carry will ease. For example, I think having Reed back helped Leath a lot.
