What happened to Serena Gray? Just a bad match or did she get injured? I think she was just having a tough match offensively, so Russ went more with Tori. The announcer mentioned a couple of times that Tori's mother was at PSU watching the match. Said he would explain but never did (at least that I caught). He seemed to think that Tori was getting the time cuz of that. OTOH, Grey hit -.750 for the match in the short time she was in.

The short answer is that Tori’s mother is a breast cancer survivor. I don’t know whether she was at the match.

Well, after reading the quotes it looks like 'mom' had nothing to do with Tori playing, but like nyline said, Grey was just playing poorly and so was replaced. I think that Alyssa Cathey maybe could come in in a similar situation. Nice to have that kind of depth.
Got the impression from Coach's comment that Bryanna was dinged up and so Gabby needed to start. We'll see tomorrow. Tomorrow against Purdue will be interesting as like Coach said, will need to play better against them.
22 kills in the 3rd set and hitting .486. Haven't seen PSU that hot in a while.

Weiskircher injured her back. No word on the severity or how long she will be out of action.

Gorrell's mother in previous years attended every match the team played which was also true of Bryanna's mom.
Middle attacks where the hitter travels behind the setter can originate all the way from the 4 position to being started immediately behind the setter. The short distance ones can then extend all the way from the setters location on the court to the right side hitters most distant location. This creates a problem for the defence since they cannot determine where the hit will occur until the ball is placed in the hitters attack zone. Many middle attacks are "quickies" where the hitter strikes the ball immediatley upon being released from the setter's hands

Like you say, it's a very effective offensive play. Did Gabby use it last night? I don't remember.

I noticed Gorrell was particularly effective keeping IUs middle blocker in place with believable routes allowing our outsides to swing against a single block. I think our younger middles should be doing more of that too.

How do you "stuff block" out of bound? A "stuff block" is an all-purpose block, that sometimes is by one person who blocks the ball emphatically, sometimes is by two people who may or may not make a dramatic block, and sometimes is the result of an attacker hitting high-hands, where the ball careens off of the blocker's hands and falls out of bounds for a point for the attacking team, and sometimes isn't any of the foregoing, but is something else. Maybe. It's an all-purpose term -- the swiss army knife of volleyball terms. Right? No? I have heard stuff block refer to a block that scores a point. Here is a definition from some random website.
Stuff Block:
A stuff block is when a player jumps above the net and blocks the ball back into the person that spiked the ball.

I was kidding, because the announcer used the phrase "stuff block" in multiple contexts. Not all that funny, and perhaps not all that clear that I was kidding.
