Simply put, no other coach has a more sterling reputation in VB than Russ Rose. I don't think it is always a matter of recruiting hard but more of recruiting smart. When you need OHs it is not the time to bring every short defensive player who wants to come to PSU, even as walk-ons. IIRC we have never needed California ladies to win our many national championships. We might want to find out how Pittsburgh seems to be rapidly rising in the polls while PSU is not-so-much.
Perhaps getting closer relationships with the best VB clubs could be considered smart recruiting. What do we have to lose? Our local weather didn't seem to bother the young ladies when we won 4 national championships in a row. Has it really changed that much now?
Of course the best players consider all the colleges that offer scholarships, they are not brain dead. Perhaps we should try to determine why we can't attract elite OHs and RSs like we use to. Would you rather be part of the solution; or part of the problem?
You either get better or you get worse. Pittsburgh seems to have found the better road lately and yes I am paranoid. So we can accept mediocre performance or strive for excellence. Our players and coaches read these messages and want to know what we are thinking. Offering excuses doesn't seem to be an effective plan for success.

I've created this thread so that people can have a home for their gripes and complaints and concerns about Penn State's recruiting, in the hope that posts about those gripes and complaints and concerns don't end up hijacking other threads. When I (or my Slacker Staff) see posts in other threads that I (or my slacker staff) think are more appropriate for this thread, we will move them to this thread. So if one of your posts appears to be missing, check this thread. It's probably here.

Are you not happy that Serena Gray, the #5-ranked PrepVolleyball Senior Ace for 2018, signed with Penn State? Last I checked, Penn State (with a freshman-laden team) is ranked #7 in the polls, while Pitt (with a much more experienced squad) is ranked #10. You make several good points and I don't want to get into a phishstixing contest with you however Jonni Parker is not an elite RS player in my opinion for a couple reasons. She still needs to become more consistent on both offense and defense. The RS position that traditionally was one where you wanted a tall, strong blocker to counter the opponent's best hitter. Obviously, we did not do that. I think we have other players like Kendall White, for example, who are elite. |

Apologies for my ignorance. Who do we consider elite Right Side/Opposites right now? How many of those elite Right Sides started out as Middles? How many are Seniors?
It is my poorly informed impression that Penn State is, at the moment, one of the programs that the best young players hope to hear from. I think the list of schools in that category are fairly few, though it seems like there are more schools joining the list of "destinations." I think we also call these schools "traditional powers."
Coach never misses an opportunity to thank the Administration for fully funding our volleyball program. Not all schools do that. We are also reasonably well regarded for educational opportunity, though I think there are some places with even better reputations. Having a chance to play on the Big Ten Network (or the SEC or PAC networks) must be a draw too. But I assume that being on a 7 time National Champion led by the winningest DI coach of all time is a draw as well. I would just as soon never find out how well we will recruit if Coach ever retires.
The point here is that Penn State has lots to attract the very best players. If some go elsewhere it likely has little to do with what our staff says or does, and more to do with factors not really within our control. Then, as Coach often says, it is largely up to the players who choose to come here to take advantage of the training which has been highly successful in the past, practice hard, and learn to be the best. Not all of our recruits, even the highly ranked ones, do that.

I spent 15 years coaching vb in Philly at the then best club in the state when we went to all the championships and travelled to most of the major tournaments in the country.
It was commonplace for nearly all the most successful clubs to be in attendance and at every event we saw Russ, Salima, Kalena, Mike Schall/ , Dennis on occasion Mrs. Rose.
On one such trip to Baltimore for a regional Mike excited took my arm and made me see this 8th grader from Virginia who was exceptional at that time, yep Carp and then we saw Brownie playing.
I attended a lecture in Minnesota on an occasion to hear Russ talk and while there we saw Amanda Rome playing and in latter years first laid eyes on NIA.
Beginning about 2012 and continuing until late 2015 Russ, John Dunning (STANFORD) and Terry Liskevych (OREGON STATE) held lectures and exhibitions in four or five locations
where coaches from that area could attend and watch demonstrations by local high school or college girls and then have an open session to answer questions and delve into somethings more thoroughly. It was very popular titled as THE ART OF COACHING VOLLEYBALL.mY BELIEF IS THAT ALL THE BEST COACHES IN THE COUNTRY ATTENDED AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER.......
So you observation that we need to get close to the best clubs is wide of the mark; WE ARE THERE!

Please understand that there are hundreds of eyes out there around the country that are on the lookout for players for Russ and regularly give reports and heads up.
These are not coaches trying to sell a player to him.
His tentacles are strong and deep throughout the country.

Joni Parker is not elite. Joni is an elite competitor EVERY time she steps on the floor. To say that about a Freshmen, in the B1G on a top 10 team is unique. She is integral to this team's success this year. |

And if truth be told Thayer Hall did not come here because of our balmy weather. So as long as Penn State is located where it is, then some athletes will not come here because they do not like the climate.
