Good points nyline - could just be that it's time for these young women to move onto a new experience - do we know what the scholarship situation is?

I think the last 2 seasons have been difficult/strange. I wouldn’t find it strange if they went pro or moved into careers. Moving to other schools for a year wouldn’t feel weird if it was one or two players, but it is more than that. And with Jenna (and Serena) it is a starter. Whatever isn’t working for them was also evident on the court. It just wasn’t gelling. I’m not convinced it is Coach’s age, but I’d bet the last few years have been strange for him also. Something isn’t working, and maybe so many moving on will help restart the culture. Something needs to change.

Perhaps they all got enough of the verbal craps from coach, it's tolerable when you are winning.

It seems to me that we are being out recruited for the best talent out there, I don't know why, maybe the coach's age or his demeanor, but there has to be a reason, could be the weather just ask Thayer hows that working out for her. Well, she did go 1 more round than us, but it ain't a ring for the finger.

Who the hell is gonna play the middle positions next fall ? You may be forgetting Allie Holland who had very good stats this year, including second in Aces for the team. I'm expecting that #7 Van Den Elzen and #8 Erika Williams will compete for the spot. Van Den Elzen, coach said earlier in the year, had a very late growth spurt which she was working through; Williams had an injury IIRC. I don't know that MB will be a problem, although when we lose a Hord, it's easy to feel uneasy. One other thing about Holland that felt really good was her ability to slide to OPP and terminate there. IMO a lot of MBs need time to develop doing anything but going straight vertical.

I also think that once coaches reach age 30-35, they are all going to be outside the cool zone. So I don't subscribe to the idea that Coach was cool in 2014 and could communicate with players/recruits but has reached some sort of expiration date in 2021. The thing that I do wonder about is the impact of the absence of Salima and/or another POC representing (when Salima was in TX, Stevie Mussie was here). Don't know what real impact that absence has on recruiting, but I suspect it's a factor.

I agree with many here that our recruiting has taken a hit hence we are where we are. If this season is any indication, using the transfer portal does not guarantee success like in the past. The concerning matter is that it will take several good recruiting cycles to right the ship. I am still holding my breath and feel I will pass out. 🙂

I am not sure how the process works, who does the scouting for the players, do they just watch a video of them or see them up close and personal. And more to the point, who does the evaluating, I realize their summer camps highlight a lot of players, but they for some reason do not get the best of the best. And I do agree with you, traveler, Salima leaving was huge. I was at a Rutgers PSU game a while ago when she was still a coach and it was before the match started she was on the floor and I yelled to her you're the next coach right, she just looked at me and smiled.

Well yes, I think that had an impact -- I think Bailey Webster, who was the #1-ranked PrepVolleyball player in her senior year (2010?) and who ultimately went to Texas. was pretty solid for Penn State before the JS crimes surfaced. I'm sure there were others. But football recovered -- actually improved for awhile under early-Franklin. So I don't think that's the long-term explanation (though noone can really know the total impact and its duration).

Cael Sanderson began his tenure essentially co-terminus with the JS discovery--in the sport most associated with JS apart from football. No negantive impact there.

Maybe right now it's bigger than PSU. Watching the tourney so far, I've been impressed with the level of play. If, as we like to brag on this site, WVB is the fastest growing ?HS?-age sport in the nation, then there's going to be much more talent. More moving parts. Not just a PSU thing: how did Stan and HI do this year? How'd the PAC do? Maybe we're the victim of our own success.

I think your explanation makes sense with overall parity in WVB which I think is a good thing. However, I believe the concern being expressed from the Penn State fans is not that other schools have equaled us in talent but rather passed us by.
