The good news is that we'll have a scholarship open for 2020 and beyond. Seems like there are lots of transfer opportunities nowadays. I'm sure someone of value will come along and we won't have to worry whether we can get them. I think we'll see more of this for all programs -- both decommits and transfers -- going forward. I understand coaches like Coach Rose, who value commitment and keeping your word (as do most of us, I believe) are very frustrated by developments like this. But it appears to be the way of the future. I guess the silver lining is that she announced her decommit when she did--not waiting longer. Hopefully, other opportunities will present themselves.

Sadly I do not understand that type of mentality. I come from an era when your word was your bond. And to this day that is how I operate, and will never understand people who don't. I think it is more complicated than that. I really don't understand the value of a verbal commitment. That is especially true for younger players. Too much can change between such an announcement and an actual signing. Things may change in the player's life that argue for a change of plans. The school may decide to lessen its commitment in terms of how much it values the recruit and indicate that in subtle or obvious ways. I don't know about volleyball, but in wrestling the coaching staff has, on occasion, discouraged verbally committed wrestlers who then have signed elsewhere. (Marstellar, Haines, and others) Increasingly, verbal commitments are more for fan speculation than anything else, I truly don't understand why any athlete makes a commitment prior to the actual signing of a letter of intent.

The fanbase is growing, as is the level of competition between coaches/schools to get top recruits. I think social media contributes to the changes we're seeing.

Amen to that Millennium, She is a very good player, But not worth having if her heart and mind are not in it. It wasn’t meant to be, better to do it now. Learning from the greatest coach in history vs wearing sandals all year round! Also, looks like it’s UCLA. She said she’s going to UCLA?

I don't really have a problem with a student athlete changing her mind -though it can mess up careful plans made by the disappointed suitor. A bit like a student who decides to transfer. Main point is that this is not really a new thing.

PSU was very fortunate how things turned out.

Ultimately PSU has had its share of benefits and losses to de-committing. Most recently with Parker leaving OSU.
Coach Wooden said it best “If he wasn’t eager to join us, then perhaps it was best he attend another school”
The culture at PSU will benefit further if there are those that don’t want to be there and bring them closer to success.
Looking forward to 2019 and beyond.

He probably was pleased sitting next to his very good friend (at least that's my understanding) John Dunning.

Also, not to beat a dead horse. PrepVolleyball article on Iman’s decision to leave was primarily weather related. Yeesh

Also, not to beat a dead horse. PrepVolleyball article on Iman’s decision to leave was primarily weather related. Yeesh Maybe it was a lack of understanding on the author's part of the difference between "weather" and "whether": "Iman is said to have been conflicted on weather she should honor her commitment to Penn State, or weather she should change to another school. It appears to have been a weather-related decision." (For the overly trusting, the author did not really write those sentences, but with what passes for journalism in today's world, they could have.) p.s. this is my inner "Get off my lawn" talking to noone in particular.
