Patrick Ewing started playing ball for G'town in '81. 1981 was the first year of NCAA championship WVB.
Don't know how Ewing or his teammates felt about women's sports back then. There's a clear record of pockets of opposition to Title IX from across the country and from the NCAA itself. In the 1990's, the NCAA issued a landmark (and appalling study) of the rates of hire and pay for women v. male coaches across all programs and by gender. But as late as 1996, in a case involve Brown University, the legitimacy of Title IX and the purported levels of interest in sports among male v female college students was at issue.
Cheryl Weaver, Alexis' mother, if I have this right, went to 3 final fours, including winning the 1998 NCAA Championship. Northward of 1500 career Ks from an era with different scoring. Cheryl coaches Alexis on her HS team. Cheryl's mother coached her at Sidwell Friends, also a DC-area school, back in the day.
So amazing to see the paths these two parents have traveled during the tumultuous first years of Title IX, culminating in a college selection of their daughter.
Random basketball thought: brings to mind a player from 2010's Florida Gators, named Rivers, who was the daughter of a NBA coach. She married some guy named Seth IDK, Curry or something, something to do with NBA.
