Congratulations to the Ladies, especially to Chloe.

Chloe had another excellent match. She had the best hitting percentage among the outside hitters, albeit only .195, while tying for second on the team with 11 kills. She led the team with 19 digs and had 8 "successful" service receptions on 15 attempts with only 1 error for a team leading .467.
It's interesting that the coaching staff didn't seem to discover Chloe's abilities until the quarterfinals as she rode the bench for most of the matches up to that point! When she got her chance she came through big time. She also appeared to be a team leader on the floor.

I found that to be interesting too. I suspect that the "too short" bias is very hard to overcome (although who knows, Chloe may not have performed well during practices leading up to the tournament). FWIW, Maryland's kills leader last night (with 21) was Paula Neciporuka, who happens to be listed at . . . . 5-9.

According to tonight’s posts on the RichKern.com website, under recruit listings for 2023, 6-3 OH Karris Willow from Arlington, Ohio, has committed to Penn State. In PrepVolleyball Karris is listed as one of the 76-150 group of 2023 recruits. They only rank the first 75, the second 75 are listed alphabetically.

In PrepVolleyball Karris is listed as one of the 76-150 group of 2023 recruits. They only rank the first 75, the second 75 are listed alphabetically. Here's a link to Ethan's 9-9-21 article on Karis's verbal to PSU: dignittanyvolleyball.com/karis-willow-commits-to-penn-state-womens-volleyball/ (fwiw, I believe her first name is "Karis") I wasn't aware of her PrepVolleyball rank, so thanks for that. Although many people (including me) still find PrepVolleyball rankings to be of interest, I don't think they have the same weight they used to have when John Tawa ran things, and actively solicited information from hundreds of club, high school and college coaches. I suspect the variance between PrepVolleyball rankings and college coach rankings -- particularly after the first 10 or so players -- is greater now than back in the John Tawa era. (Of course, another possible take is that the skill-level of the prospect pool continues to improve, so that there are a lot more highly-skilled players now than, say, ten years ago, so that the difference between a #76-ranked recruit and a #20-ranked recruit is less than it was previously). In terms of Karis Willow, my guess (totally lacking any basis in fact beyond a hunch) is that she deserves better than a 76-150 ranking. Our Recruiting Matrix lists of all PSU verbal commits we are aware of: dignittanyvolleyball.com/recruiting-2/recruiting-matrix-verbal-commits-penn-state-womens-volleyball/

I've always been curious about the rankings and how commitments to the power schools affect the rankings (rather than the other way around); e.g., if RR thinks Karis is that good, we should move her up... ?

I've always been curious about the rankings and how commitments to the power schools affect the rankings (rather than the other way around); e.g., if RR thinks Karis is that good, we should move her up... ? Well, not knee-jerk, but I would attribute a lot of "cred" to someone like Coach Rose who has identified 4 Olympians and 2 alternates (if my memory and math are right -- high probability they aren't) for the past two Olympics, as well as underrated players like . . . . Micha Hancock (granted, lots of folks knew she was very, very good, but she wasn't a top-10, or top-20, or even a top-30 PrepVolleyball Senior Ace). So yes, mentally, if RR thinks a player is good, I'd generally defer to his judgment. One exception is if we knew he had higher-ranked (better?) recruits who chose another school, and he simply had to fill-out his roster. I don't have any indication that is the case here.

Yup. She's first for the class, I think. And, I was wondering as I wrote that about Micha. And on that tangent...I often think about how a chain of events led her to PSU.
