I think we should be plently concerned about Illinois, not just Nebraska. I remember the Illinois match last year, only one I got to see in person, how Illinois took advantage of PSU's collapse. Quite a few teams, including Texas, USC, perhaps others in the tournament, would beat PSU they way they played last night. Let's hope that was the bad match for the season.

The highs and lows after every match are exhausting...we win in 3 and we're practically expecting a NC...we win in 5 and the sky is falling!
We played a team that "was" underrated. They had their first true test as a unit and we're able to come together to win.
They have a full week to prepare and practice. And will most certainly focus on the weakness in their rotations and within their defense.
Let's all take a deep breath and realize a NC isn't won or lost in 1 conference match.

We have to realize that the Big Ten is a tough conference again this year and we are in the middle of the pack right now. We just need to take them one match at a time. BTW Minnesota is very impressive.

Sorry for late posting: Here's the match write-up, with post-match quotes from Coach Rose (includes hints at possible rotation/lineup changes) and Megan Courtney (plus match video courtesy of psumaui, which is also available on this forum's Video Jukebox): Courtney Leads Lions as PSU Edges Minnesota in Five-Set BattleHere are some excerpts: Thanks. Good read. Where did you get the Coach Rose quotes from?

Thanks. Good read. Where did you get the Coach Rose quotes from? I have media credentials for this season. He is vying for his own show on Fox and his book tour and signings starts next month. See what happens when you go to the dark side!

Hi Nyline, based on Coach Rose's quotes, what are the lineup massages you think may be in the cards? Seems pretty clear from context that he means getting Lee on the court. How do you think that gets accomplished? Do you see anyone else getting more PT in the near future?

If Lee plays it is probably Frantti who is going to sit. Frantti is not having a bad season by any stretch but Lee might mix things up a little bit in a good way.
Saturday was obviously not the greatest day for Weiskircher but that's something every young setter has to work through -- what to do when the offense you're running suddenly has trouble terminating -- even in system. And that was a bit of a surprise for me.
It was a real surprise that the Tapps could defend Washington so well. And that was really it right there -- without Washington's slide producing at .500 or .600, PSU is a good solid team but nothing extraordinary. They've got to bring more options into the offense when that happens. Everything Minnesota does, Illinois does. Even Ohio State on a good night.....
The good news is that Courtney was just an awesome, amazing senior leader who basically willed them through the match without a lot of help. Next time they're in the deep water, hopefully there will be more leadership from others.

Beyond that, who knows.

Beyond that, who knows. Besides what's been said in many threads, I think the DS lineup is another liability for PSU. As the position states, they are supposed to be defensive specialists, but both Kendall, Lainey and Taylor all have not contributed to much to the defense. Megan is getting 50 plus attacks and in addition she has to be the main defender even though one of the DS are nearby is something I feel will hurt the team in a close games. If Keeton didn't emerged early, PSU would've been even in a deeper trouble.

That pretty much sums it up but it looks like Taylor Krause has won the spot for right now.

Expanding the range of the attack would help...more attacking from Washington on quick sets to the middle, seeing what Lee can add, helping Frantti figure out how to hit across or up against blocks and get rejected less often. I was also surprised to see Washington get blocked, that has happened so rarely until that match. PhillyTom hit it right on saying that Courtney's strong will was a huge factor. The third set collapse was on everyone out there. As Courtney said in the interview, they let down some, and having gotten pounded doing so, hopefully the coaches will be able to use that as motivation to play hard every point, no coasting. It really was like a loss. Poor serving certainly contributed, they poofed some nerfball serves that created easy in-system attacks for Minnesota. Serving was the eakest aspect of Courtney's game vs. Minnesota. They sure could use a big tall MB against teams like Minnesota and Nebraska. Hoping that this was their bad match of the season, a la the Illinois match last year. Looking for a rebound with a strong performance vs. Nebraska, show they can play tough every point against a tournament caliber team.

Santana is a great player for MN. Won't miss her next year.
