Overall, a pretty good season. The unfortunate overhyped preseason buildup had raised expectations to an unrealistic level. But the first few matches of the season brought reality into focus and it was clear that the talent was not there to contend for a national title. Given that reality, the team performed at, and sometimes above, expectations.
Some of the criticisms of Katie's on court coaching seemed to me to be more an expression of frustration than any sort of informed reality. The fact is that KSC, having started with a shell of a team before her first season, has put together two competitive seasons with many quality matches. That is a compliment to both her administrative coaching and her on-court performance in practice and during matches. She now faces a continuing challenge for next season and beyond in an increasingly competitive NCAA sport!

With PSU WVB getting crushed and Manny Diaz leaving, both within a few hours, I'd say this is a day that will live in Penn State infamy. Not really, most of us expected PSU would lose this round. I'm just happy they won a set and it wasn't the worst performance of the 2023 sweet 16 losers.

We lost in the same round to the same opponent but had fewer losses in 2022 and played slightly better. I only wish we could've had both Kash Williams and Seleisa Elisaia on this year's roster too. Penn State needs more guns/offensive weapons to be in any final four discussion. Offense wins championships and Wisconsin has plenty of it. This year's Badgers team reminds me of the 2007-2009 PSU teams of old. I'm hoping Katie goes hard in the portal this year. I think, she will have a limited number of years to use the championship name recognition as a recruiting tool before PSU gets relegated to 'mid B1G team' status. Of course, this is only one fan's opinion. I think that if she's making final fours, here and there, that will elevate the status of the program in the minds of future recruits. Minnesota seems to me, to be a testament to that philosophy; a serious, perennial final four contender under Hugh McCutcheon.

This match reaffirms my belief Wisconsin and Nebraska are a level above all other teams. Unfortunately that may be the situation next year also. Not every team can be the best team in the country. Expectations have to be realistic. It's possible Wisconsin may not lose another set until the championship match against Nebraska.
Penn State had a fantastic season. There was some good talent on the team and IMO the coaching staff made the best of it. Like all fans, after a season ending loss, we need a few weeks to put things in perspective.

We will see how it goes. But I think you are underselling the nonB1G contenders this year. The field is rapidly leveling and the days of B1G and Pac10 dominance are over. The addition of the four west coast teams to the B1G next year will make it even more formidable increasing the in-league challenges to PSU. But don't undersell the ACC and SEC in volleyball!

Plus, Wisconsin has FOUR other transfers-in: Sydney Reed (libero) from North Carolina, Joslyn Boyer (libero) from Iowa, Gabby McCaa (MB) from Boston College, and C.C. Crawford (MB) from Kansas. That's a total of SEVEN transfers-in for _isconsin. In addition to the four you named for Penn State, Ally Van Eckeren, Taylor Trammel, and Lina Perugini also transferred in. So, also seven.

Maybe we need more NIL money. Uh, do we currently have any that is used?

While I adjusted my expectations early on, and thus was not too disappointed in the result, I did have hope that season would be an improvement over the last.

Adding two All Americans and other impressive transfers to a team with effective returning defenders led to excitement and the coach to pronounce that this was a "special group." We did see some flashes - the Nebraska match for example, but disappointing inconsistency. I don't like to criticize individuals, but I was surprised that the team seemingly was not as connected as I (and I'm sure the players) expected by season's end.

I know, after I wrote this, I realized I was being a bit hypocritical. I guess I'm just mad that they were able to get better transfers than we were.
