I continue to marvel at how our opinions (mine included) of this team swing dramatically with each match. I suppose our inconsistent opinions are consistent with the teams inconsistent performances. Yes, that's what it is to be a fan. You experience the whole gamut of emotions -- the thrill of victory to the frustration of defeat.

OK, I had to look that up (regrets of a misspent youth . . . and young adulthood . . . and, well you get the point), but the Internet says that's Stalin (who was almost certainly a Nebraska fan, what with the Big Red stuff and all that) Well, maybe it was Stalin. What a guy! I hope I never have to work the death, tragedy, and statistic quote into a serious posting. And if it was Uncle Joe, I guess I do owe apologies to Lenin.
The Nebraska fan angle... You may have something there. Watching the whole Devaney Center scene is kind of unnerving. A total lack of spontaneity. Go BIG RED!!! And then there's that Bob's Big Boy mascot standing on its head, or the cheerleaders standing still but for making the pompoms appear to vibrate while the band plays that song you always hear from the Texas band. Creepy.
OK, this made me laugh. It's funny. One word of caution: when the cameras are on the reserved section in Rec Hall (which I'm in) the fans can look pretty comatose (probably including me). One problem for the Huskers, if I understand the situation (which I probably don't) is that they don't have as many or as well-placed tickets for students as we do. Now the thing I do like to poke fun at that gnu2vball didn't mention is their facility. Check out the image on the"Upcoming Matches" on DigNittanyVolleyball. So far, either no Nebraska fan has noticed, or they don't care, or they notice and say "Darn right!"

It's a photos of the Taj Mahal with the "Devaney Center" written underneath! Ha!

Living in Denver gives me the opportunity to meet quite a few people from Nebraska. With few exceptions, they're very nice people. I even lived in Omaha for a few months and enjoyed it. Anyway, the subject invariably goes to school loyalty/football. The Nebraska fans always bring up the "Endzone Play." I think it was in the 80s; Mike Guman's* father was the ref who made a very bad call that cost Nebraska the game. One of the fans still had a picture of the trapezoidinal endzone that would have had to exist in Beaver Stadium for Guman's call to have been valid. My usual response was that they received compensation with the 1993 (or was it '94?) National Championship. I respect Nebraska's program and I tease with the fans who know a little or a lot about volleyball. It's a good rivalry and I certainly hope we can claim a win in a tough place (I think Huff Hall is nastier).
*Late-70s running back for PSU. Didn't make it into the endzone against Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. Played pro football with the Bears.

The second set collapse against Michigan from a 22-17 lead to a 22-25 loss got me wondering about that rotation in the PSU lineup. It was rotation 1 with a back row of Weiskircher, Courtney, and the libero (Holcomb in that match) and a front row of Franti, Whitney and Lee. In that match that rotation scored 13 points while losing 26. The other five rotations combined scored 77 points while losing 63.
I had attended the away matches at Michigan and Michigan State and remembered that rotation 1 had seemed to be PSU’s strongest in those matches. That sent me on a deeper analysis looking at the combined results for the last ten matches through the most recent Maryland match.
In the most recent five matches rotation 1 scored 58 points while yielding 71 (a winning percentage of 45.0%). Each of the other five rotations scored significantly more points than they gave up with a combined result of 321-241 (a winning percentage of 57.1%).
But in the five matches preceding those matches rotation 1 scored 100 points while giving up 62 (winning percentage = 61.7%). That made that rotation by far the best performing during that span. The other five combined for a 345-283 margin (54.9%).
The change in results for rotation 1 are reflected both when serving and when receiving. In the earlier matches the serving results were 57-45 and the receiving results were 43-17. In the most recent matches serving results were 21-38 and receiving results were 37-33.
I’m nowhere near knowledgeable enough about volleyball to understand the root cause of this dramatic change, but I find it to be interesting.
I'll be charting the Northwestern match by rotation with considerable interest in the results.

Wow! That's some impressive research. You can be sure Coach Rose looks at the stats for each rotation. The drop in rotation 1's effectiveness is precipitous. It's surprising that Coach Rose stuck with it so long.
Thank you so much for sharing this with us.

Nice work. Really appreciate this in depth analysis on the rotations. I always had a feeling that certain rotations are a liability but wasn't sure, I never did the work. I think one important aspect to keep in mind is who the opponent is, playing on the other side of the net, in each rotation, because the opponent matchups also figure into the success or liability of certain rotations.

Yes, we need to remember this was just one game against an opponent that is significantly less talented than most of the other BIG10 teams but getting better.
I agree that Kendal made a nice appearance and filled the job well but there is some reason that COACH did not change earlier and that must have been because he saw Keaton as the best of the bunch.

Safe to say we will need to see ALL the the ladies bring their B+ to A games from now on.

So, for those of you in Rec Hall this evening, is the season's attendance going to top 60,001?

Keep me posted. I'm going to be out for most of the match, unfortunately. Need to entertain guests tonight.
