And Minnesota loses in five against Texas A&M... They play Stanford tomorrow so it will be interesting to watch how they play them.

So four B1G teams that were supposed to be in the top half of the conference already have one loss. This is not good. My PTW is going to suck. I guess I can give up winning for the season.

The latest big surprise is #18? Hawaii just beat #2 Florida. Match was in Hawaii which does give them a great advantage other than home court advantage, like home cooking refs. Some real iffy calls in this match and one at a very crucial time in match. Mary Wise was not happy with some of the calls made by refs. I uploaded this match to youtube and you can see why Dave doesn't like to leave Hawaii during preseason! I won't put this on Videojukebox because not a Penn State Match but still entertaining to watch.
One of the other things I have noticed is that Florida killed themselves even more than the refs did by giving Hawaii way too many free chances by easily lobbing ball over net instead of killing it. Another thing I noticed is that Florida didn't seem to adjust to anything Hawaii did. I saw this also last year when Florida played Stanford in Regional Final and got swept in 3. They also let the Hawaii crowd get to them. You could see it! When they start chanting "LETS GO BOWS" it gets really loud in there! As I stated before, TV doesn't do it justice.
If for some reason Hawaii doesn't get seeded and there still is a good chance this will happen if they lose 3-5 matches in regular season play, then I hope they get sent to Happy Valley for rounds 1 & 2! WE WILL HAVE A BLOCK PARTY!!!!!

Nice win for Hawaii program. Hawaii has this great history of beating top teams at home -- Washington, Nebraska etc...That must be an awesome atmosphere.
Re Florida, not surprised at all. An ACC or SEC team that gets to the Top 5 is almost always an imposter. They almost always lose in the NCAA tournament to the first PAC or B1G team they meet. It's not that Fla doesn't have talent, obviously they do, but they they just don't get the experience in tough matches week after week that players in those two conferences get.

At least the Wisconsin and Nebraska games will be in Rec Hall. Then, there's the always friendly Huff Hall. We will have a good measure of the team by then. I'm sure Coach Rose is getting them ready.

I have to wonder how long Nia Reed stays on the bench with Simone Lee in a hitting slump. Jelena Novakovic is a proven scoring machine, who I doubt is going to stick around PSU for 5 years. Rose has two aces up his sleeve here and I hope he uses them.

Jelena is a proven scoring machine... Proven? Scoring machine? Why would you presume Jelena wouldn't be willing to redshirt? The way PSU recruits there's always an ace or two up their sleeve. But those aces aren't played until they're ready.

Coach Rose has already publicly praised Simone once this season in a post-match press conference, saying she is among the best offensive players on the team. And Jelena may prove to be a scoring machine, but for Penn State she's not yet a proven scoring machine. Granted, tough to do when you haven't played.

So, for whatever the reason, if coach Rose is does not plan to use her in upcoming games, exploring red-shirting her with Tori, who is in the same boat, would be something that I wouldn't mind.

Since Jelena has NEVER played in a college vb match my comment has to refer to her past MVP performances. Jelena can hit over the block which seems to be a serious problem so far for Simone. I didn't say Jelena would not redshirt just that I don't see her staying in college for 5 years. Call it just a hunch.
How much do you have to play to determine if you are statistically in a slump? Just asking. Personally I hope she hits a hot streak.

Or you could find hitting percentages off of the same attacks attempted.

Maybe we'll see a lot of her against Wisconsin -- the Badgers seem to have no answer for her. But yes, it's tough to have so much talent getting so little playing time. We'd all like to see what they can do. Still, an oversupply of great players is part of what makes Penn State what it is. If you want to compete at the highest level, the tradeoff is you have to beat out all-American caliber players to win a starting spot. There will be two front row spots open next year and REALLY big shoes to fill.
