....and cool thing is I had a psu sweatshirt on this morning doing some last minute grocery shopping . A mom with her younger boys shouted "WE ARE" at me from a couple parking aisles over... I wish I only had that whenever I go out with my PSU t-shirt, and I mostly do. Unfortunately, in a parking lot elevator after watching PSU-Nebraska at a local PSU football gathering place, a young guy cornered me, "What do you think of Sandusky?" I stuttered something like "that SOB" ... I think I know what to give as a (very) long answer, but I need suggestions for a much better short answer. |

That's a tough one, especially when people catch you by surprise.
Maybe something like, "Dreadful. Glad he was caught."
Depending on if the person asking is trying to be snarky I might add, "Make sure you don't have one lurking in YOUR backyard."
I think people forget that sexual predators are everywhere.

Maybe, instead of answering, you inquire about the level of their concern... which college team do they hate more... Univ Washington or Univ Utah? Ted Bundy attended both... or, do they condone lady killers by not cornering all of their sport team fans with unrelated questions?

The smart response is "Dreadful" or "Awful." There is nothing else to say. There are bad things going on everywhere, including at our school. When publicized the reaction is exaggerated because most of us are helpless to do anything about it. So shaking one's fist at PSU (in this instance) makes one feel a little better/self justified at otherwise doing nothing. Internally, we can acknowledge that more than a few people (both as University officials and government officials), could have done something different or better. So stick with the one word "Dreadful." That will make the inquirer feel smug and self important, but end what would otherwise be a pointless conversation (the young guy did not really want to hear what you had to say. Just wanted you to feel bad.) |
