We've posted selected individual and team statistics through 9-19-2019 for the 2019 Penn State Women’s Volleyball team. Our Slacker Staff has added very limited commentary (a limited effort from the Slacker Staff. Shocker, right?). You can add more (and undoubtedly better) on this forum. Note that our staff is famously reluctant to check their own work, let alone the work of others. So mistakes invariably creep in. Please let us know if you spot one (or several). And our apologies in advance. Here's the link: www.dignittanyvolleyball.com/stats-update-penn-state-stats-as-of-9-19-2019/

Thanks to the staff for that work. I vacillate between whether total points or hitting percentage is the better measure of a successful player.
Lately I am leaning toward total points. Plummer's percentage is not super high, but she scores, a lot. Players who take lots of swings, even if they don't get kills all of the time, are super important.

Surprised that Serena only has .59 blocks per set. I haven't paid much attention to blocks and so thought she's a middle blocker so she must do well on blocks I guess I was equating Kaitlyn and Serena which is obviously not the case. Also, Salima called Cathey a natural blocker, and I thought that she was doing okay, except that she has 1 solo and 2 block assists so far, all in the Stanford match. Of course, this doesn't take into account soft blocks which are very important for overall defense.

Also was just noticing that Jonni Parker doesn't have any sets at all, or very very few. Is that a function of our serve receive/passing being better or what?

She is a hitter even from back row, so systemically they want her to pass and get ready to swing. I wasn't very clear. What I meant was that I haven't seen Jonni doing any setting at all meaning that she also hasn't been setting in out-of-system situations. Last year she would every so often be setting in oos situations, mostly when she was in the front row.

Your point is well taken-one would think that a 6 rotation player should have one or two sets by mistake (eg: a setter dump). But the system calls for the Libero to bump set balls that are popped up by a dig. Jonni's role as emergency hitter should minimize the opportunities for assists even in out of system situations. I may be entirely incorrect, but by my observation, last year, Jonni was not the main trash remover. But I feel like she is more of a primary target for that role this year. Your observation is pretty significant because Stanford really attacked Gabi and forced her to dig so she could not set-part of that was because we really geared up to slow down Plummer, leaving the right side less defended. Clearly it is important to have a primary plan for when that happens, especially since our defenders get the ball up so often. i think we are going to see B1G teams try the same plan.
