Seeing as there is a bit of a lull, with only the sub-regional to look forward to, which should win fairly easily, I thought it would be interesting to compare last years team to this years team.
Setter - Gabby over Bryanna - Setter Defence - Tie - tho possibly Bryanna slightly better. Not knocking Gabby's defence. She gotten quite good. Backrow Defence - 2019 - Middles - 2019 - cuz more experience, better passing and better setting Pins & Opp - 2018 - Nia Reed factor, tho Jonni is better this year. Toni better this year, tho she had some really good matches last yr when she played, - Cathey not improved as much as would have hoped. Physical issue w/Cathey. Depth - Mixed - DS depth is quite good, better in 2019 IMHO. Hitting depth in both 2018 & 2019 not good. Team Defence - 2019 - Intangibles - 2019 - The 2019 never gives up. 1st Wisc game only one where really got blown out; & got revenge for that. Did last years team ever come back from 2-0??? Terminal OH - 2018 - Not even close in this one.
Looking at my totals, I would give a bit of an edge to the 2019 team. Just my opinion. Tho, looking back at last years final two games against Minn & WIsc, it appeared to me that last years team played them better than this years. Question there is, were Minn & Wisc better last year than this, the same or what? My impression is that Minn was better last year and last years Wisc team wasn't quite as good.
Interested in what some others think who understand the game better than I do.

Tori wasn't an OH last season, she was a middle. Taylor Leath was the other OH (along with Nia Reed).

I’m getting a vibe that 2020 could be better then both. 😝

I agree the 2019 defense is a lot better, and that being the case I think the 2019 version is a bit better, and the 2020 version will be better especially if we get a terminator on the outside.

We will sorely miss Kendall White passing and defense and Keeton Holcomb's passing. Of course we'll have Jenna Hampton, but we don't know HOW well the other DS will fill Jenna's and Keeton's roles from this year.
IMO, if we can add more offensive weapons and blocking improves next year, it won't matter if the back row defense is not on par with this year.

I love white. She is one of fav players on this team but I think Hampton will be fine and psu always has like 100ds’s to choose between. I think there will be some kind of action on pins in offseason just have no idea what yet.

Bryanna was a better blocker, it's not even close, but I'm pleasantly surprised by Gabby's digs defense. I thought she'd be on par or slightly worse than Byranna, but I think she's better. Gabby's had a lot of double doubles this year.
Gabby's setting and decision is definitely better, IMO.
The middles this year have improved tremendously. They don't need a perfect ball to get a kill. Also, it took our middles almost a full season last year before they were barely able to hit a slide and kill an overpass.
Backrow defense and passing is improved this year. Our smalls have kept us in a lot of rallies and probably won several matches for us.
The OH have been the sore spot and a liability for us this year. Although, Tori seems to have finally figured things out. However, we will need Tori, Parker, and the middles to all get going in every match if we expect to beat any good teams. Cathey is a good blocker, but her offensive numbers are lacking. She may need another season or two before she can be dependable in every match.
The 2019 is definitely a scrappy team, which never gives up. I think last year's team lacked some of that fight, not that they were bad. Last year's depth seemed better, though. Tori was in the middle, so when Serena went down, she came in and took care of business. I recently rewatched the PSU vs Washington match of the 3rd round (it's on youtube) and I really enjoyed it. I missed some of the players.
I was drooling at the thought of having had Nia Reed or Taylor Leath play with the 2019 team.

I think catheys window is gonna be closing. Between recruits and possible transfers I have to believe players are gonna be comming with more skill

I had a brain cramp and didn't even mention blocking. It seems to me that blocking last year might have been a bit better; especially when you factor Bryanna into the mix. But not that much better. There are times when this year's team blocking is amazing. Then there are other times

I think we'll miss Sciorra and Holcomb as well. Good that Peed and a few others have had a bit of experience and have stood up well.
As a whole, I do not recall us having more than 3 players at the L-DS positions in any given season who could be counted on to dig and serve like this. We have had 5-6 L-DS players in many matches this year really contributing, consistently. Even during our fabled run in the 000's, we didn't have this kind of strength...[edit] DEPTH
