Gutted, but in truth we didn't deserve it. Why? Because (a) you can't defend a 1-0 lead for 88 minutes against a quality side like Italy and (b) you can't bring on two young players in the last minute of extra time just to take a penalty in the shoot-out and (c) you shouldn't be asking a 19 year old to take the crucial 5th penalty.
Upsides? England's first major final since 1966. Also a very young squad, most of whom will be around for the next two World Cups and European Championships and some for the next three.
Next up - World Cup 2022 in Quatar, Nov/Dec 2022

Just want to say: I called this. Months ago. Was derided for my prediction, but now it has happened. Geoff Carlston has returned to Ohio University, whence he came. He'll be bringing his famous Geoff Carlston Memorial Challenge...no, not a tourney--a challenge of any point without regard for the likelihood of success--executed on the last point of a match...with him, no doubt. As we know, until this past year, the State of Ohio seemed better at developing talent (Nicole, Megan, Nia, Jonni) for export than in harnessing it within WVB programs. The OU program seems to have squandered what talent they had over the last several years, so hard to predict what Carlston will be able to do; but he seems to be better positioned for the long haul than would any other choices. Good luck.

a challenge of any point without regard for the likelihood of success--executed on the last point of a match... Reminds me of the 2018 NCAA championship match. Nebraska challenges the very last point of the game claiming the opponent's back row hitter was past the ten foot line when she wasn't even close to it.

Exactly!! Lol. Imitation is the highest form of flattery...amongst a certain breed of coach I guess.

The Texas legislature voted a bill into law that any state school must get their approval before changing conference. Unclear if this will block Texas from leaving the B1G.

I would guess the legislature would either give its approval or simply amend the law to exempt Texas in this instance, notwithstanding that: "University of Texas at Austin is a public institution that was founded in 1883."

With Oklahoma and Texas going to the SEC, Stanford sees the writing on the wall. They won't be a competitive DI football team and the PAC-12 will not be a factor in national football rankings. Stanford has put together an exploratory committee to look at creating a DII West Coast conference with no athletic scholarships.
There have been rumors about B1G adding some of the PAC-12 schools. At this point in time it looks like that's not something Stanford is interested in.
