AVCA published its mop-up edition. Prior to that, I had posed some real/rhetorical questions...your choice!
Questions I'll have:
-Baylor, Pitt, Tx: given their records, were the previous rankings justified?
-Is a team's record somewhat irrelevant to its rank...knowing that B1G teams and Stan are going to show up in the post-season?
-To what extent is the non-conference and conference record relevant...or is it all about the tourney?
and
-Should I be spending the first day of Hanukkah and day before Christmas Eve thinking about this?
Which brings me to thanks to you all for the gift of your time in creating and participating in this site. I have learned so much and gotten so much fun from it...from y'all.

AVCA will publish its mop-up poll later today. Questions I'll have: -Baylor, Pitt, Tx: given their records, were the previous rankings justified? -Is a team's record somewhat irrelevant to its rank...knowing that B1G teams and Stan are going to show up in the post-season? -To what extent is the non-conference and conference record relevant...or is it all about the tourney? and -Should I be spending the first day of Hanukkah and day before Christmas Eve thinking about this? Which brings me to thanks to you all for the gift of your time in creating and participating in this site. I have learned so much and gotten so much fun from it...from y'all. 1) -Baylor, Pitt, Tx: given their records, were the previous rankings justified? My Answer: Baylor: No. I don't think they were even top 4. 2) -Is a team's record somewhat irrelevant to its rank...knowing that B1G teams and Stan are going to show up in the post-season? My Answer: There are at least three questions here, so I'll answer three. 1) Should a team's record be somewhat relevant to its rank? Yes, but that brings in the second question: 2) should the quality of the opposition (not the perceived quality) at the time of the match matter? Absolutely, but there often isn't a look-back, it's just "Team A beat #7-ranked [AT THE TIME] Team B [WHICH LOST 15 matches on the season, as it turned out]; and 3) should the score of the match and the location (home/away) matter? Yes, I think total points should be taken into account, as well as where the match took place. I think Pablo does much of this (and probably much more, in a more sophisticated way). 3) -To what extent is the non-conference and conference record relevant...or is it all about the tourney? My Answer: I think this is basically covered in question 2, above. All the matches matter; when they took place matters; where they took place matters; and what happened in the match (beyond a simple W-L) matters. I think that's equally true for all matches -- conference and non-conference. and 4) -Should I be spending the first day of Hanukkah and day before Christmas Eve thinking about this? My Answer: Yes. In fact, continue to spend time right through the holidays. We (my Slacker Staff and I) are confident you can fit things in!! Which brings me to thanks to you all for the gift of your time in creating and participating in this site. I have learned so much and gotten so much fun from it...from y'all. My Reply: Well said -- and to you, and all of you. You made this a very gratifying year for me. My Slacker Staff is never really grateful, but their grumblings of mutiny (GRUMBLE, GRUMBLE, GRUMBLE; MUTINY, MUTINY, MUTINY) trails off to a barely audible whisper at times. This is one of those times. Thanks very much. Love, Peace, and Volleyball. Nyline (and the Slacker Staff. Mumble. Grumble.)

Ah, Polls, the only thing they are good for is a discussion, they have no real purpose, other than making the people who vote in them feel important.
