Perhaps by necessity, but still impressive, that we have three six-rotation capable players in Jonni, Mary Cate, and Anastasiya!

Gutty effort with major contributions from the newcomers. Obviously, this year, depth will be even more important than usual.

I must say, I'm pleasantly surprised. PSU played better than I expected. What's with Hannah Flowers? I expected her to start. Guess she got beat out by someone? Russ didn't play many players. Not sure on what the sub system was (I'm never great at picking that up, and wasn't consistently paying attention tonight. But she's a middle, and Russ seemed to stick with just Serena and Kaitlyn. Kudrashova, Parker and Annie Cate (were going to love her, I think) were the pins. Am I missing anyone in the front row?

By the way, I'm going to edit the thread to "Illinois @ PSU 2-5-2021" and start a new thread for tomorrow's match. Easier to find old matches that way.

Apologies if I missed it, but do we know why players were "unavailable" ?

Apologies if I missed it, but do we know why players were "unavailable" ? They didn’t say anything on the broadcast tonight, but it might be that the players who weren’t playing had COVID-19. Per B1G rules, after you exit the quarantine period after testing positive you have to undergo a cardiac health assessment, so possibly they are awaiting results or something similar to that?

Final observation:
Kill leaders were Fitzpatrick with 13 and Kudryashova with 11. Annie Kate hit .308 and Anastasiya hit .381.
Maddie had 16 digs.
If those newcomers can continue to play that well and are combined with the returning players, it could be a good year.
Let's see what tomorrow brings.

Lot of service errors. Both teams will play better tomorrow.

Just rewatching the match. At 1-3 in the fourth set Kudryashova makes an overpass on the Illini serve. The Illini left side slams the ball, but Maddie makes a foot save that goes to Jonni to keep the point alive. The same point ends when Maddie sets Jonni for the kill!

Not the complete match but good enough. Enjoy before the YT police takes it away.

Impressed with Fitzpatrick. Is a good hitter. I was impressed also. Really powerful swing even when out of system and no fear. At one point Salima said "she got lucky" but a lot of times a hitter makes their own "luck."
