Will they start calling Maddie "Sherlock"? ( A mark of how much I love bad puns/word play, is that I'm writing this, even though I have to explain it). Like . . . Sherlock Holmes. The games afoot. Drum roll. Don't forget to tip your server.

"Certainly when Jenna [Hampton’s] healthy, we’ll have two people who can play the libero position and the defensive position, because the other people who I put in at the defensive position tonight weren’t providing anything to help us out."
Russ is still the same old curmudgeon.

Interesting fact from the match - Jonni served eight times and PSU failed to score every time!

Interesting fact from the match - Jonni served eight times and PSU failed to score every time! She had two service errors, but that still leaves six serves where the team came up empty. I'm curious what Coach Rose would say about that stat.

Illinois serves well. Our serve receive was taxed pretty hard. Jenna should help with serve receive and maybe that will affect the substitution patterns.
I was also interested that Coach mentioned the 6/2. It has been my understanding that Coach is not a big fan of the 6/2, the Weiskircher/Detering experiment out of necessity notwithstanding. I was not able to judge how well Oether did as a defender. Blossom is quite solid in the back row. If both setters can defend well, then getting an extra hitter or bigger blocker to sub for Blossom could be helpful.

Agree, but I'd only mention that W/D 6/2 was more opportunity than necessity. One lefty, one righty, one strategic opportunity to stress the opponents' defense.

I would imagine that Gabby would have done better, if for no other reason than she has more experience back there, but 8 ain't bad. Course, that doesn't say it all, cuz Coach looks at how many possible digs someone could have, not the actual number of digs they had. So maybe Oerther had a possble 16 digs and missed 8 I certainly don't know.

I'm not the greatest of volleyball observers, but Coach said what I was thinking, that the defensive players other than Maddy didn't add that much. I was noticing in some situations, that when a ball went off to the side or back and someone was chasing it down, that the other players didn't follow the one chasing the ball in order to be in a better position to make a play on the ball.
I though Coach's comment on energy in the building was pretty funny. "It’s hard to talk about energy when there’s 30 people in the building".

Ethan, I appreciate how quickly you get the results and comments up after the match. It's always interesting to see what Coach says along with the players. I also really enjoy the transcripts from the weekly press conferences.
I'm one of those old curmudgeons who would much rather read the press conferences than watch them. Tho I remember watching some very funny press conferences that would lose a lot just being in print. The press conference with Megan Courtney, after the BYU match (I think) was classic. She was asked how nice it was to have a career match at such an important time. Her answer was, "I guess." She obviously hadn't even thought about it. She was always such a team player. Plus, I don't think she liked the spotlight.

It reminds me of a match against Nebraska where they played a 6/2 for part of the match, during the tournament. I think it was the the year before the Weiskircher/Detering complete year 6/2. So he might just do that in a few specific circumstances.

Just rewatching the match. At 1-3 in the fourth set Kudryashova makes an overpass on the Illini serve. The Illini left side slams the ball, but Maddie makes a foot save that goes to Jonni to keep the point alive. The same point ends when Maddie sets Jonni for the kill! Brilliant save by Maddie - love the way she just charged the net when she saw it was going to be an overpass slam. Girl's got guts!!
