Too many new pieces. It's going to take a while for this team to gel.

This is a very poorly played match by Penn State. But it is the first match of the season. That's not an excuse -- it's true for both teams -- but it's true. My guess is if Rose were giving a post-match interview (I doubt he will) he would say the staff didn't do a good job of getting the players ready, but would also have some critiques of things the players need to do better.

There are still a lot of young players that didn't get much experience last year and then you add a lot of new players which equals not very good. I think this team will be good eventually but we'll have to be patient until then.

Thanks for the heads up on the stream. On set point coach subbed out Jonni who was serving for Menger, and also took out Gabby to go with a big block. However, the serve was out so we did not get to see if the desperation tactic would have any effect.

I think that some of us (myself for sure) were too optimistic when seeing the transfers etc. Look at Poulter and the middles on the US Olympic team. It took them quite a while to get in sync. Now if we only had Jordan Thompson to help up out while PSU is getting in sync.

I am sure you are right about what Coach would say to us. We fielded a very experienced team, except for Holland. Hitting a low percentage, and giving up a high percentage to GT. Still have another set to make things better.

That was brutal. I'm glad I don't visit that other volleyball message board. I can envision the waves of criticism about to happen.
Well, it's still possible to turn things around.

If "starters" aren't performing, Rose will go to "subs" to see if they play better. If he didn't, why would they stay on the team?

Subbing out the setter for an extra blocker is almost always done at the very end of a set when the team is losing. I classify any team that does this as "desperate."

Still have another set to make things better. As others have said, it's an "experienced" team, but they don't have experience playing together. Again, no excuse, but I think it's a factor -- and volleyball really is a team game, where small things matter. Thinking back, I remember what a difference Kendall White's fire often made in tough matches.

Obviously entitled to your own opinion, and you may well be right, but I find it impossible to characterize any move in the first match of the season by 43rd year Coach Rose as "desperate." Maybe we just use that word differently.
