13 Service errors. I expect PSU to do better later today. It is always a risk to play the first match of the season on the road against a fairly good team. Unexpected stuff usually happens in the first match no matter how much preparation. I'm not worried. PSU has the talent and will quickly get it back together. The only thing that bothers me is the 6-2. It rarely works out. I highly doubt Russ will be using a 6-2 in conference. One setter always seems to be the clear favorite in connecting with the hitters. Amen, brother. One stat struck me -- Jenna Hampton led all the DSs with 15 digs. In second place among the DSs was . . . every other DS with . . . zero digs. GT outdug us something like 61-44. GT had 2 SEs v PSU 13. We did outblock 14-8 IIRC. And Pritchard was charged with 2 REs IIRC...

Just watched the last few points on Video Source. At least the match provided great joy to the Georgia Tech team! I know it is the first match of the season. But, it is a long way from the poor passing performance here to being a team in contention in the B1G!

Definitely an eye opening stat but not surprising considering Russ was playing outside hitters all the way around most of the time. the DS's barely played. Good point, and a belated welcome to the forum. Keep us in line!

Great write-up, Ethan. I was hoping you could somehow make it turn out differently. Oh well.

The double sub restricts other substitutions. But I don't think we tried that until set 3, so that is not the only reason the DS's barely played. In the snippets I saw from the live stream Ethan found, the serves were going to the OH's and the passing (in those snippets) was really not good. The service errors has to be the most frustrating. That is the one shot where the player has full control. Notably, GT had far fewer service errors.

Quick (very fallible) math tells me GT cumulatively outscored PSU by 13 points -- 11 of which can be accounted for by the differential between PSU's 13 service errors and GT's 2.

I am going to be surprised if PSU doesn't end up looking much like last year's team.
Adanna and Annie Cate have similar skills and Ericka's and Anastasiya's abilities also match up. I doubt that Russ can afford to play Ericka as a six rotation player. So that means that he will sub in a DS for her as he does Anastasiya.
So the line up has Adanna/AC as the six-rotation hitter and Ericka/Anastasiya at the other outside. Last year the top DS was Maddy. So I would expect her to sub in for Ericka/Anastasiya. If not Maddy then some one who beats her out for the job.
The bottom line is that the team will functionally look just like last year.
Alternatively, I suppose he could go with a "short" lineup and play both Adanna and Annie Cate. That would be a strong passing lineup that would still maintain some back row hitting capability at the expense of some blocking.
Now that I have expressed my decidedly non-expert opinion, let's see what really happens as Coach tries to bring this team together!

I always appreciate your thoughtful opinions, even if inexpert according to you.

Don't sell yourself short. I do recall Anastasia doing some passing last year-and I also recall that the team overall passed pretty well. But with changing personnel your suggestions make sense. Of course players improve, or perform differently with different combinations of teammates so ...

Well, we are off, 1st win to a championship season, I hope I don't jinx us, but I have faith in the Ladies, one little hick-up does not matter.
