Does Penn State play two matches tomorrow; on the same day after playing a 8:00pm match today? Why such a condensed schedule? Maybe I'm misunderstanding the schedule.

I believe they do -- they play Oregon State at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow and then LSU 8:00 p.m. That's been a pretty standard schedule for these pre-B1G tournaments for Penn State. It's a way to get three matches into a two-day span. Of course it comes with some risks, as you point out. Fingers-crossed.

This is standard tournament scheduling. Travel teams for HS-age players do this at least one weekend per month with 2 or 3 (or if they go to finals) more matches in a day. Old hat. PSU played twice last week on Friday IIRC.

FWIW, LSU was rated #3 in the 2021 SEC pre-season poll, and Iowa State was rated #5 in the Big 12 preseason poll.

Russ Rose on Iowa State’s Cande Herrera, who was the only active NCAA women’s volleyball player in the Tokyo Olympics with Argentina:
“We played them two years ago and she was terrific. I watched every Olympic match I could see. She’s improving as she gets older. They have a new setter, [Jaden Newsome], so they’ve got some new players since we saw them two years ago, because we didn’t play last year. I think she’s certainly one of the top middles in the country. There are not a lot of Olympians who are in college in our sport. She was the only one [in Tokyo]. She’s a great offensive player and blocks really well. She has a good serve. Argentina plays hard and is passionate about their sports. I’m sure that we’ll notice her improvement for the players who were on the team two years ago.”

Tigers' Lindsey Deberg, raised in Iowa (expect she played some old friends this morning), 3-time AA at Mizzou, is a force. Expect she'll be up for our match-up.

If it were to go five sets that would be about 10:00pm. After a shower and time to calm down the players probably don't get to sleep until midnight. That seems a little late for getting up the next morning, but it's been a few years since I was a 19 year old kid.

After a shower and time to calm down the players probably don't get to sleep until midnight. That seems a little late for getting up the next morning, but it's been a few years since I was a 19 year old kid. The 8 P.M., 11 A.M. and 8 P.M. seems to be the preferred schedule. Last weekend UCF played at 7 P.M. on Fri nite, 11 A.M. on Sat morning and 7:30 P.M. on Sat nite. With this schedule the players have the longest overall recovery time. The other team, in the case of the PSU tournament, that has a "good" schedule is Iowa State who plays at 11 A.M & 8 P.M. on Fri, and at 5:00 P.M. on Sat. The other two teams will have to play two games within 5-6 hours, either on Fri or Sat. So it's sort of a case of "pick your poison". As others have mentioned, most volleyball teams are used to playing multiple matches on the same day. I thought it was pretty funny that the UCF commentators were saying that PSU had an advantage over UCF because they had all day (Sat) to recuperate and UCF had two matches that day. Excuse me, but UCF made the schedule; you think maybe that they picked the schedule for UCF that they thought was best overall for them?

C'mon Jo. I mean what great hosts they were! This was all part of that. As was not showing the the webcast the introduction of visiting playersand refusal to webcast the matches that didn't include UCF. What could say more about what great hosts they were? Shirley I jest. And my name ain't Shirely.
