HOUSTON, Texas – The No. 13 Oregon volleyball team closed out its road trip to Texas with a straight-set victory (25-14, 25-17, 25-23) over SMU Friday afternoon. Brooke Nuneviller registered a team-high 10 kills followed by Karson Bacon and Taylor Borup with eight apiece. With their second win in the past 20 hours, the Ducks improve to 5-0 through the first two weeks of the season.
Up Next: Oregon is back home Sept. 10-11 to host the Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge and a stellar four-team field that also features No. 10 Minnesota, No. 17 Penn State and No. 20 Stanford.
Defensively, libero Georgia Murphy recorded a match-high 16 digs and Abby Hansen posted six blocks against SMU. Nuneviller had nine digs in the match and Borup matched her kills total with eight digs. Oregon held SMU to a .057 hitting percentage in Friday's match.
The Ducks won the first four points of the match and extended the lead to 8-3 with a kill by Borup to force an SMU timeout. Oregon maintained a cushion of at least three and with the help of a 3-0 push, increased its advantage to 19-12. The run of points continued with the Ducks winning six of seven to finish the set.
Oregon posted a .381 hitting percentage with just one attack error in the opening frame.
Using a similar start in set two, the Ducks jumped out to a 9-4 lead but SMU (2-2) began to chip away at its deficit and pulled to within one with UO ahead 12-11. Up to the challenge, the Ducks responded with an 8-1 surge and led 19-12 after a kill by Bacon. On the team's fourth set point, Nuneviller gave Oregon the 2-0 match lead with a kill.
The Mustangs answered with a quick start in the third set with leads of 4-0 and 7-1. However, with SMU holding a 9-3 advantage, the Ducks rattled off nine-straight points to regain control of play. Bacon tallied three-consecutive kills in the middle of the run and Nuneviller capped the rush of points with a kill.
Oregon did not trail for the remainder of the match but SMU stayed closed and got to within one as late as 18-17 in the third. A quick three-point push extended the lead to 21-17 and a few points later, Borup gave the Ducks four match points with her eighth and final kill of the afternoon. On its fourth chance to close it out, Oregon got a kill from Gloria Mutiri to clinch the straight-set win.
The Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge begins Friday afternoon at Matthew Knight Arena with Stanford taking on Minnesota, followed by the Ducks' match against Penn State.
