PSU came up just a little bit short in the 4th set. I sorta figured that the 5th would go as it did. PSU just ran out of gas. PSU really played a great match, especially considering that it was in Wisc.

I wish the Badgers played at Rec Hall this year. But alas. B1G Scheduling.

Well, the ladies may have lost, but they battled a tough opponent in their gym and let it be known they will not give up. Congratulations on a weekend that could have really been lost, but they did salvage some respect, if not from Wisconsin then certainly from Minny. Now the trick is to not get complacent and to build on this for the rest of the season and into the tournament. Go LIONS hold your heads high.

A little rotation information from this match. Going into this weekend, in eight Big Ten matches Ro 1 (Gabby serving) had a 166-91 record in points played. The same rotation had a 91-70 record when serving. Both figures were far and away the best for the team. In the Wisconsin match Ro 1 compiled a 17-33 record in points played and a 4-15 record in points served. Far and away the worst for the team. The combined record for the rest of the rotations was 95-84 in points played.
Things had gone a bit south in the Minnesota match when PSU only scored 1 point on 8 Gabby serves.

They know how close they were to losing in 4. I would wager that they probably respect PSU more after the match than before it.

Hitting stats were interesting. NOBODY hit well except for Hord and Rettke. Adanna hit .212 on 33 attempts which was better than Jonni's .167 on 60 attempts. Sure, I know, Jonni gets all the bailout trys so her average will be lower than it could be. Orzol only hit .241 on 58 attempts, but again, she carried Wisc in the 4th set. Erika, in spite of her good start, ended up hitting negative (-.067). Anjelina hit negative also (0-2-7, -.267) in the short time she was in. PSU hit .050 in the fourth set and Wisc hit .159. Yet the score was 24-23 before Wisc won 25-23. Both teams had 30 attack errors. Big difference was Wisc had 7 aces to PSU 3. AND, Wisc serving put PSU in out-of-system situations a honkin' lot of the time. PSU serve receive was definitely show to need a LOT of improvement. Salima said that the Wisc serve was the best in the B1G. I know it was a lot better than the Minn serve. The Wisc block came on in the last 2-3 sets, BUT, it didn't have the huge effect I would have thought (no pun intended ), considering that one rotation had a 6'8" and 6'9" player at the net. Wisc had 90 digs to PSU's 77. Quite a difference. In spite of Jenna, who was flying around the court as usual, I would say that Wisc defense was better than the PSU defense. Though, one could attribute that to the fact that Wisc has more terminators than PSU does and so PSU had a lot more difficulty digging those balls. Frankly, I would say that PSU had no business giving Wisc this close a match in their house, as, in my opinion, Wisc definitely has more talent than PSU. I'm still amazed at how well PSU played and scrapped in this match. Very impressive. But, I REALLY hate moral victories. I was really depressed after the match. PSU came SO close. Not quite as bad as the loss to Nebraska in 2017. But close.

The combined record for the rest of the rotations was 95-84 in points played. Any clue as to what to attribute this to? (I'm being lazy and not going back to look at it myself.) Although this was the first time in awhile that Rollins was in the back row for Ro 1, I doubt that would be the issue.
More likely is that Wisconsin had super-good rotations against Ro 1. When Gabby served their back row was Barnes, Hilley, and Civita. Their front row was Orzol, Smrek and Robinson. After the side out Wisconsin rotated into Barnes serve. The back row was Barnes, Civita, and Hilley. The front row was Rettke, Orzol, and Smrek. That is a dynamic back row and a formidable front row. And then you add in a strong serve from Barnes.
Sheffield has a different approach from Russ in that he uses many substitutions. Only Hilley and Orzol play both the front and back row. Civita, Boyle and Ashburn sub in for Loberg, Rettke, and Smrek. He gives up the threat of back row attacks in favor of more digs, better passing and perhaps stronger serving. That may be a matter of philosophy or the available talent on his roster.
