I concur that PSU deserves a lot of credit for their effort in this match. Serve receive was (as usual) the issue. Against a team with good blockers, positive passing is essential. Wisc. dig totals were in large part attributable to the fact that all too often Jenna could not get to the second touch, or was setting more than 10 feet off the net.
It feels like this has been a problem for a few seasons now. Even when we sub in a DS to receive we struggle. Kendall and now Jenna pass(ed) well. But it seems like the rest of the group is not consistent enough. Makes one appreciate Taylor Leath.
Adanna showed improved hitting all weekend. She got some tough sets down, or kept the team in the points. Given the passing issues, Gabby deserves a lot of credit (she must be extra tired after all that scrambling). Jenna was the most impressive-deservedly featured in many replays for her spectacular efforts.
Final point-dig stats are arbitrary. Should a dig be credited after a great block touch? Wisc. got their hands on many swings making life easier for the back row.

Any clue as to what to attribute this to? (I'm being lazy and not going back to look at it myself.) Although this was the first time in awhile that Rollins was in the back row for Ro 1, I doubt that would be the issue.
More likely is that Wisconsin had super-good rotations against Ro 1. When Gabby served their back row was Barnes, Hilley, and Civita. Their front row was Orzol, Smrek and Robinson. After the side out Wisconsin rotated into Barnes serve. The back row was Barnes, Civita, and Hilley. The front row was Rettke, Orzol, and Smrek. That is a dynamic back row and a formidable front row. And then you add in a strong serve from Barnes.
Sheffield has a different approach from Russ in that he uses many substitutions. Only Hilley and Orzol play both the front and back row. Civita, Boyle and Ashburn sub in for Loberg, Rettke, and Smrek. He gives up the threat of back row attacks in favor of more digs, better passing and perhaps stronger serving. That may be a matter of philosophy or the available talent on his roster.
Thanks for checking this out! My opinion is that Russ is using less subs because he wants as many backrow options as possible. This is the first year I can remember in a while that he's used this few subs. IMHO.

In my memory (which is definitely getting worse ), she was an average serve receiver. The digs stats can be arbitrary, but Wisc was definitely getting more balls up than PSU was. IMHO, PSU defense is quite good, but Wisc defense is better.

I think he is saving subs so he can use the double sub when he needs it as in Minn. But also I wonder if the bench players are actually better than the starters at passing or defense.

Another match where Cassie didn't play at all. Wonder what that is about? Ethan, maybe a good question on Tues? Pretty sure she was on the sideline.

Here’s the perspective from the Wisconsin student section on match point last night.
