It's Thursday and one of the most interesting NCAA tournaments is about to begin. It will be very interesting to see who does what this year as few teams have been consistently good. The Volleyballmag.com Monday group thought that there might be 12-16 teams that could win the championship. I would say 3-4, but it's very possible, especially this year, for an unexpected team to win. My list would be:
Louisville Texas Wisconsin Purdue
Maybe Kentucky or Baylor, tho I don't have a good handle on Baylor. Don't know much about them save that they have 2 really good OHs.
It will definitely prove interesting.
If PSU can find their form that they had about two thirds of the way thru the season, they could go pretty far. I definitely give PSU a chance to beat Pittsburgh and then Purdue. I know that last year, PSU played Texas the best of any B1G teams during the tournament.
May the games begin!!!
P.S. One of the very interesting factoids for this tournament: Neither PSU or Stanford are seeded. Might be the first time ever. (Not sure).

Dayton 3-1 over Marquette - Marquette lost the first set pretty badly but played well the rest of the match. Marquette won the 3rd set 26-25 (I think). But they just didn't have enough to win or take it to 5.\ Kansas 3-0 over Oregon. 25-19, 25-21, 25-22. The expectation was that Oregon would win. Oregon didn't look very good. Brooke Nuneviller hit .234 on 47 attempts. Oregon not ready to play. Rice took out San Diego 3-0, 25-20, 25-19, 25-20. Not real close. And as a reward, they get to play Texas.

Purdue won 3-0 over Illinos State Univ. Scores were 25-21, 25-17, 25-11. ISU stayed with PUR was ups 21-20 in the 1st set. Then PUR went on a 4 pt run and was up 24-20 and that was it. PUR zoned in on ISU and was getting a lot of touches ISU attacks and ISU didn't have the height to stop the PUR attack.
Texas beat Sacred Heart 3-0. Scores were 25-19,25-17 & 25-19. Sacred Heart had a hitter Jasmine Rogers who hit .500 with 12-1-22. Texas couldn't stop her. Unfortunately the rest of the team hit under .100. BUT, Sacred Heart played hard, never gave up, and never let things fall apart. It was a fun match to watch cuz Sacred Heart showed such spirit. They knew they would probably lose, but they didn't let that pull them down and didn't give up. Definitely impressed with the team.

Very few sweeps in the first round matches. Testimony to how much more competitive volleyball has become!

Ball St took out MI 3-2, 25-17, 22-25, 25-18, 25-27, 15-6. MI was playing from behind the entire match. MI needed to win the 4th set 27-25 to get to the 5th set. When teams get behind in the 5th set by 3 pts, (I know it doesn't seem like very much), they start pressing and end up, (usually), lose big. The 5th was tied 3-3, and then Ball St went on a 5 pt run and that was it. MI the first B1G team to go down.

It is bittersweet, although I relish anytime a Michigan team loses, I am sad because the BIG lost, my dream is to see the final four all BIG.

Stanford is on it's way to beating Iowa St Univ. Up 2-1 and 20-13 in the 4th.
ILL lost the first set to W VA 23-25, but then took the next 3 sets to win reasonably comfortably.
Purdue lost the first 2 sets to Dayton 25-23 & 25-19 and then came roaring back to take the next 3, 25-15, 25-6, 15-5. Don't wake up a sleeping giant is the moral.

Ball St looked very good and not sure last time a team from the MAC made it very far. MI hitters weren't terminating, Jones was getting the ball a lot but no traction. Didn't look like an attitude thing: the faces of the MI players were still looking really involved. But had no answer.

The big green O was ranked 11th when they blanked PSU back in the tourney w/Stan. With their crazy artsy floor that made WVB watching difficult.

Kentucky is in danger of being knocked out by ILL. Ill won the 1st set playing nearly perfect volleyball. They came back to earth in the 2nd with KY winning 25-19. ILL was up 6-5 in the 3rd set and then ILL went on a 19-5 run to win the set. Now ILL is up 6-1 in the 4th.
Edit. KY is now down 12-6. Nope, now it's 12-8.
Edit. KY has gotten within 4 every so often but that's the best they can do. IL up 16-10.
Edit3. IL now up 19-12
Edit4. IL up 24-20. KY has saved 3 match points.
Edit5. KENTUCKY GOES DOWN to ILL 3-1
