All credit must go to pennstate1973 , who has been predicting a PSU win in this match since this past Spring. What is your Lotto pick, pennstate1973 ? Yes-and we must never again use the word "ledgerdemain" The scouting report on Stanford was entirely accurate and he predicted the result too. Kudos!

Very pleased with the win. Even would have been content with a five set loss. Just the fact that the team could hang with Stanford would have been encouraging. This raises expectations a bit. I was very unhappy with the announcers during the last point. They didn't seem to recognize that there was a challenge on the play. Finally, they never showed where the four hits occurred! BTW it happened on the initial serve receive when the hitter hit into the net rather than the block. Now there is a little pressure on the women to follow up with a good match against Oregon! This is a difference between PSU fans and Stanfans. On 'the other site' the 'fans' are questioning every one of the players' (and the coach's) abilities and performances. All the posters are extremely disappointed, given the talent that they think should guarantee success. PSU: clearly more fun!

I saw this match on tape delay (baby sitting granddaughter; only thing better than watching a PSU volleyball match!) and enjoyed it immensely.
First, on very positive note-wins are always good. Big respect to the coaching staff for bringing a group of new players together so quickly, and preparing for this match. You cannot block that well without having an excellent scouting report.
The block was spectacular. I don't recall such a blocking performance from Penn State, even in the Championship years. Stanford was forced to adjust its attack.
Serving was very good. Stanford was out of system a decent percentage of the time, quite aside from the aces.
Second, notwithstanding the positive comments from the announcers, passing was not very good. Elisaia probably wore out her shoes because she had to run around so much. And the problems were not limited to a particular player. All serve receivers struggled at different times. Poor passing was a major factor in the poor hitting percentage.
Third, I would love to see the hitters go down the line more. The cross court swings while less likely to go out, continue to be much easier to block (or touch).
Stanford scored more points and hit for a slightly better percentage, but that was not enough. I am certain that the ladies feel that their hard work is paying off and that the staff knows how to help them win.
Excited for Oregon!

The hitting...not just in % but in real numbers was oddly disproportionate: STAN PSUKs 62 48 (14 point difference)But I think these other categories told the story: SA 3 8SE 14 5Net -11 +3 (14 point difference!) BLKs 13 21 (8 point difference)

I just went to 'the other side' (rare occurrence) and reviewed the reactions of the Stanford and Oregon posters to the two matches. The Oregonians are much more rational and willing to give credit to the opponent. My favorite Oregon comment - "That PSU libero is insane!"

I so agree on that. But the defensive move that keeps coming to my mind is Grimes laying out in set 1 fist out saving a tip or shanked pass leading to a point. Such finess from a frosh!!

How does the ranking points system work. If we win this 3-0, how many points does that get us? Or is it more complicated than that? I didn't see a reply to you, so I figured I would take a stab at it. There is no objective point system per se except for the subjective opinion of the voters in the ranking polls. So, a 3-2 win should be just as good as a 3-0 win, but voters can choose their own criteria when ranking teams. Some voters could place more importance on "style points" than other voters and rank accordingly, but there is no science or system to it. I think this win is going to give Coach KSC some additional "street cred" when she sits down to talk with recruits. Hopefully, it is just the first of many big wins for this team and this coach. I am excited! Thanks Ski, sounds a bit random. I'm replying here after the Oregon win - what a great weekend!!
