Impressive win by USA over Bulgaria. The first set was a runaway 25-14. Bulgaria came back in the 2nd set to win 25-23. US serve receive in the 2nd set was poor leading to few opportunities for good attacks. But USA recovered in the 3rd and 4th set to bury Bulgaria 25-11 & 25-15. In the third and fourth set Bulgaria lost their will to compete as it didn't matter what they did as USA was almost scoring at will. Franti had the match that we have come to expect from her with 17 kills, 1 block and 1 ace. Ogbogu had an outstanding match also with 8 kills, 5 blocks and 3 aces. USA outblocked BUL 12-4, out aced them 12(!!) to 3. USA hit a rough spot in the 2nd set with BUL blocking quite a few USA attacks, but in the other 3 sets, it was all USA.
Carlini set for the USA with Poulter seemingly out with some type of leg injury or discomfort (she had a bandage on her right leg. She also didn't warm up). JWO left in the 2nd set with some type of injury or discomfort; didn't hear any specifics on the broadcast. Morgan Henz finished the match with decent play. IMHO, Carlini set a pretty good match, mixing up the sets and getting her hitters pretty good opportunities. Cuttino replaced Drews with the USA at 19 in the 3rd set. All in all, a pretty good win by the USA.
The USA is leading their pool with 9 pts with Serbia second with 8 pts.
P.S. The live stats page is pretty comprehensive. Each play they give a list of every touch of the ball by both teams. Very thorough. Also, of course, they have the total attacks, kill, aces, blocks et ceteram for each player.

I also watched a Beach volleyball match between USA and Brazil, Sarah Sponcil & Teresa Cannon (USA) vs Carol & Barbara (Brazil). The first set was a disaster for the USA as they were aced something like 5-6 times. Plus the USA team was blocked quite a few times. The score at one time was 12-2 Brazil. Brazil ended up winning the first set 21-10.
The Brazilian team is ranked #1 in the world. The Brazilians are actually a bit undersized, but are incredibly precise. They were hitting the lines and making the USA team work for every point.
The 2nd set was much more competitive. The USA was up 4 or 5 pts, something like 17-12 but then Brazil went on an 8-1 run to close out the set, winning 2-0. Sponcil & Cannon are a fun team to watch and will continue to get better. Cannon was one of the best blockers in the AVP and Sponcil is one of the best defensive players also.
The beach volleyball is going on concurrently with the indoor World Championship. Both on Volleyball World TV.

In light of her advances over the last year, we've discussed before Frantti's meteoric rise as a freshman (natl freshman of the year IIRC) followed by good but not great performance thereafter. And she didn't seem to take any joy in the endeavor. And fast forwarded to last year -- photos and video of a changed player looking so much more engaged with other players, pumped up, reacting with joy, etc. I wished her well in my mind when she went to play professionally but I was way surprised but delighted to see her on this stage. BTW, I was thinking about Lee just today. I have recollections of her being subbed in with the hope that she'd spark a comeback in a number of matches. IIRC she had moments but a lot of inconsistency. Coach always had faith in her, though. As a starter in her junior year (again IIRC) she. just. took. off. Some folks have suggested/hinted that Ali had some physical issues in college that slowed her progress.

Japan just upset Brazil, 25-22, 25-19, 17-25, 25-20. Japan playing without their captain Koga. Only Japan's 4th win in 33 matches against Brazil. Last set was a set of runs. Japan was up 19-14 and Brazil reeled off 5 pts to tie it at 19. Japan then outscored Brazil 6-1 to takes the set 25-20 and the match.

USA up 1 set and 20-7 in the second. Really nice to see the "bench" players in and doing well. Carlini is setting, Henz is the libero and doing "really" well, Tapp is in , Bajema is in, Cuttino is in. And the "b" team is doing well. Plus Anna Stevenson-Hall. Plus SWP, Sarah Wilhite-Parsons.

USA took Germany in 3, -17, -13, -24. The bench players played most of the 2nd set and all of the 3rd. Serving was fabulous for the USA as Drews had 4 aces, Stevenson-Hall 3, and Hannah Tapp 3. Henz had some incredible gets. It looked like Poulter and JWO could have played but were rested. I would say that the 2nd string serve receive wasn't quite as good as the starters, and the blocking wasn't quite as good either. But the bench players did do a credible job coming in, with most of them playing for the first time in the World Championship.
