Looking forward to the Wed match with ILL and the Sat match with OSU. The OSU match in particular will give us an indication of how much the team has improved in the last 2-3 weeks.
As seeyajohn's said earlier, (need to be 11-9 in B1G to be sure of being in the NCAA tournament), then need to win 4 of the next 5 matches (ILL, OSU, RUT, MD, IND), and then win at least 1 of the final 5 matches (PUR, MINN, WISC, NW, PUR).
I think PSU had a good chance to beat ILL in ILL, and to beat NW in NW. But I'm beginning to think that PSU has a good chance to take 1 match off of PUR also. This does assume that PSU wins the matches that they should win. It wouldn't surprise me for PSU to lose to one of the lower level teams during this stretch. It's hard to be up for all of the matches.
We shall see.

Thanks Ethan. It's really nice to have quotes from KSC and the players right after the matches.

I'm really curious what's up with Anjelina's offense. Early in the season, she was getting kills, and she looked to be jumping higher and hitting harder than last year. She was asked to hit a ton of OOS sets, and so I chalked up some of her hitting errors early to the quality of the set she was given. Right before Coach Katie started the sub pattern of Anjelina playing back row and Alexa playing front row, though, Anjelina starting hitting a lot of balls way out, and when she gets back row sets, she's still doing that. She almost looks like a completely different player from the first half of the season when she swings at the ball now. She seems to be hitting the ball really flat with no top spin. That seems like the kind of thing that should be correctable in practice, especially for such an experienced pin hitter. She's a great server, she's passing well and playing good defense, I'm just surprised her offense seems to have disappeared mid-season. She hit .000 against MD with 3 errors, and -.500 today with 1 error on two attempts.
Whatever is going on, I hope she knows a bunch of folks are rooting for her to rediscover her swing!

They might also surprise us with one win against either MN or OSU, but I'm biased. LOL

I'm assuming she's working through some kind of injury. I don't think her issue is mental. The only good thing I see is that Markley is getting a lot more reps.

I don't know what the issue is, but I am confident that Angelina will work through it (she is a fierce competitor, very smart, highly skilled, and a VERY important part of this team, in addition to being a really nice person). I don't completely agree with your analysis of when the issue first arose (again, putting aside what led to it -- I have no idea). Here are some stats -- which don't prove anything, but may provide some context. Or not Reasonable minds can differ. None of this analysis is meant to be a knock on Angelina -- as I said, she is very talented, a VERY important part of this team, and WILL get through this -- whatever "this" is. Final note: I reference current Massey Ratings for each team, not because I think they are the best, but because they are up-to-date. Here's a link to Angelina's match-by-match stats for the season to date. Angelina had a number of solid/very good performances in the pre-B1G portion of the season, but leading up to the B1G opener with Indiana, Angelina had four consecutive OK -- but not great -- performances: *LSU -- #39 Massey Ratings (13 kills, 6 errors, 56 attacks, .135 %), *Stanford -- #7 Massey Ratings (12 kills, 8 errors, 40 attacks, .100 %, Angelina started the first 4 sets, with Kash Williams starting the 5th set at OH, and Cassie Kuerschon starting in the back row), *Oregon #14 Massey Ratings (9 kills, 5 errors, 35 attacks, .125 % -- Angelina started the first 4 sets at OH, with Kash Williams starting the 5th at OH, with Angelina starting in the backrow as first server), and *Howard #182 Massey Ratings (8 kills, 7 errors, 27 attacks, .037% -- Angelina started all 3 sets at OH in PSU's sweep of the Bison) Angelina had pretty good performances against U Albany -- #275 in Massey Ratings (5 kills, 1 error, 16 attacks, .250%), and Coastal Carolina -- #122 in Massey Ratings (8 kills, 2 errors, 21 attacks, .286%). B1G Season * Indiana (Massey Ratings #65), Angelina started all 3 sets at OH (and got the first kill of the match). For the match, she hit .000 (7 kills, 7 errors, 29 attacks). *Michigan (Massey Ratings #30) Angelina started Set 1 at OH. Angelina did start Set 2 and Set 3 in the back row -- with Kash Williams starting at OH. For the match, Angelina hit .000 (5 kills, 5 errors, 24 attacks). *Wisconsin (Massey Rating #6), Angelina started Set 1 at OH, and had (I think) 3 attack errors and no kills. She started Set 2 in the backrow (with Kash at OH). In Set 3, Kash started at OH, with Mandi Morioka in the backrow. For the match, Angelina hit -.400% no kills, 4 errors, 10 attacks. *Michigan State (Massey Ratings #92) Angelina started all three sets in the backrow, and hit .250 (2 kills, 1 error, on 4 attacks). *Ohio State (Massey Ratings #8) Angelina started in the backrow in four sets, but rotated through to the front row. Markley played in four sets and started in the 5th set. For the match, Angelina hit .167 (3 kills, 1 error, 12 attacks). Markley hit .176 (5 kills, 2 errors, 17 attacks). *Illinois (Massey Ratings #44) Angelina started all three sets in the back row. For the match, she hit -.333 (no kills, 2 errors, 6 attacks). Markley hit .350 (10 kills, 3 errors, 20 attacks). What I don't know: why has Angelina's offense taken a dip. It could be an injury or injuries. It could be inconsistent connection with the setter. It could be a combination of alot of things. What we can see from these stats is that starting with the LSU match, her offense has been inconsistent. I believe (I may be wrong on this) the switch to starting her in the backrow didn't happen until sets 2 and 3 of the Michigan match, followed by sets 2 and 3 of the Wisconsin match. Her offensive inconsistency started before then. Coach Katie appears to have changed the lineup to try to get more offense. Kash definitely provides that, but isn't a 6-rotation player. Markley has provided a spark several times, but she isn't a six-rotation player either. Angelina is the best six-rotation player on the team, when she gets her offense back on track. My take is that Angelina will work this out. She is too hard a worker, too talented a player, and too competitive not to .

I thought carefully about what to write before starting that post, and I agree with just about everything you said here. My top line message was the part about rooting for her, because I echo everything you said about her being a fierce competitor and important part of the team. I didn't want to speculate too much, but at the same time, just wanted to mention what I had been noticing in all the recent attempts she has taken.

pinkpanther I appreciated your post, and wasn't trying to criticize it. It'certainly makes sense that the switch to the back row may have been a challenge for Angelina. The bottom line is, we don't know what's going on. I remember back to the days of Ali Frantti, who had several periods where she struggled, but also several superlative matches and strings of matches. Fans would express frustration with Ali, some saying she had been overrated coming out of high school. It turns out, she had some kind of physical issue (I've never been sure what -- back maybe?) that really hampered her performance. But she persevered while at Penn State. After she graduated, she was able to work to resolve the issue, and ultimately made it to the National team. One of my favorite players.

E: Great interview. Learned so much about her that I was surprised I didn't know! The thing that makes me happiest is knowing how much she loved being here. With transfers you never know if it was any port in a storm or a real choice.
