I think we have a really tough path... but I also think we have the special opportunity to end both Wisconsin's and Pittsburgh's seasons.

Any thoughts why 1) PSU was a fourth seed and 2) why PSU placed in the top half of the Wisconsin bracket?
PSU beat Stanford which was a number 1 seed and Oregon who was a number 3 seed. PSU had already played and lost to Wisconsin twice in Big 10 play.
So many other half brackets in the tournament they could have been placed. Makes no sense and seems intentional.

PSU RPI is 19. I suspect Wisc. is the No. 2 overall tourney seed, so it makes sense that the Regional competitor would be the third No. 4 seed.

PSU RPI is 19. I suspect Wisc. is the No. 2 overall tourney seed, so it makes sense that the Regional competitor would be the third No. 4 seed. Yep -- RPI is the key -- and a really bad metric that distorts things (particularly for a very tough conference like the B1G -- the toughest, actually). I don't believe that playing teams like Loyola (Md), Howard, and SUNY Albany helps.

I don't believe that playing teams like Loyola (Md), Howard, and SUNY Albany helps. I think the staff did a really great job scheduling this year. They were a new staff with some new players who needed time to work some things out and build some confidence. (Keep in mind the questions from outside were whether the NCAA streak and the consecutive weeks ranked streak would end! Maybe those questions seep into the inside if non-con is rocky...) With the benefit of hindsight, obviously you could schedule a few stronger teams to boost the RPI, but you also take the risk of losing and losing confidence and momentum going into Big Ten play. While you'd like to be as high a seed as possible to avoid facing the strongest teams earlier in the tournament, there's not a huge difference between seeds 2-4. If your goal is being a 1 seed and hosting all the way, then yes, schedule tough (and win those matches!). You saw that Coach Rose scheduled really tough in 2017 to get a top 4 seed (Stanford twice, for example) to boost the RPI.

PSU RPI is 19. I suspect Wisc. is the No. 2 overall tourney seed, so it makes sense that the Regional competitor would be the third No. 4 seed. Wisconsin is the overall #3 (Louisville is the overall #2), so that makes us the #14 seed. I think we’re a little better than that, but given the metrics the committee uses, that’s a good seed. Most people were thinking we would realistically be one of the higher 4 seeds, and that’s what happened.
Yes, if we make it to the Sweet 16, a potential matchup with Wisconsin will be very tough. But I’m glad we’re not in the Texas quarter, and while I think we could take Stanford again (assuming we made it that far), I get nervous about our team traveling across the country…that hasn’t always been kind in the tourney.
At least with Wisconsin, this team was ahead 12-10 in the 5th a few weeks ago with them, so they know they can compete. And they have already had the experience of being swept in Madison, so they are used to that environment and it won’t be a surprise/shock. For this team, I think that familiarity is a good thing.
In terms of the #5 subregional seed we could have drawn, I’m glad it’s not Georgia Tech, or a few others it could have been. PSU swept UCF on their home court last year, so KSC has experience preparing for Melville, and Holland has experience blocking her.
Considering some of the other matchups, I’m pleased with the subregional. Stanford getting Pepperdine in the FIRST round (!) is absolutely absurd, and Wisconsin could face Washington in Round 2…and frankly I think that’s a tougher opponent than any of the subregional 5 seeds. I also think Oregon has a tougher subregional than we do.
The Huskers have arguably the easiest subregional of all.
