Those first two sets were by far the best two sets that the team has played this season! Although they fell back to normal levels after that, they fought hard in the fifth and still came close to a major upset! Overall it was a strong performance for the Nittany Lions. Nebraska is just better.
Tomorrow will bring a big challenge for the team to come back after that tough loss and be able to compete effectively against a strong Purdue team in West Lafayette!

Once again, defeat was snatched from the jaws of victory. This team is shaping up to have less success than last year's team, despite having considerably more talent. At what point do these disappointments become an indictment of KSC?
"At what point do these disappointments become an indictment of KSC?"
Seriously?

At what point do these disappointments become an indictment of KSC? This team does not have "considerably more talent" than last year's. As to KSC's performance, although I was not a supporter of choosing her, she has done a remarkable job of using the transfer portal to produce competitive teams from the shamble that was left from Russ' last few years of unsuccessful recruiting! It will be a few years of recruiting success or failure in the now highly competitive D1 volleyball arena before it will be fair to judge Katie's results. In the meantime, we should be thankful that she has been able to give us two winning seasons!

I loved watching the two Styles of coaches recruiting. Nebraska does it with freshman that are recruited by the coaching staff….and Penn State does it with all the transfers. Tonight, the nod goes to the young of Nebraska
Eventually, What method will work better?

I think KSC (and probably every coach) would prefer to have a roster stocked with players she recruited, but when she was named head coach last season, and carrying over to this season, she didn't have that luxury. Starters/stars Gray, Hord, Blossom and Rollins had transferred out and Jonni Parker graduated. Incoming freshmen Markley and Grimes, while good, weren't setters or terminal pins. KSC went to the portal out of necessity. This season, same story. No returning star setter or terminal six rotation pin. Thus, Mac and Jess and Cam. Next season, Izzy Starck enters as one of the top two or three setters in the 2024 class. Falduto is a very highly-regarded libero. Cam and Alexa return, and maybe Karis will be ready. I don't think the portal will play as big a role for KSC.

I think Jess is eligible to return as well. Remains to be seen if she decides to.

I agree, the ups and down are maddening. They play like champions for 2 sets (serve well, spread the ball around, block like crazy, etc.) and then become ordinary and revert back to the tendencies of the season (rely on Jess, play tentatively, etc.). They almost pulled it out in the 5th set, but that was after digging a hole for themselves.
I believe they have the talent to be champions, but am not certain what is missing. Is it the burning desire to win? Is it confidence in the face of adversity? Is it conditioning, the ability to play at a high level for 5 sets? I just don’t know.
One thing I have noticed is that opposing coaches seem to know how to “ice” PSU by calling timeouts at critical moments. KSC doesn’t seem to do that very often. She seems to wait a bit too long in my opinion. It might also be beneficial to have KSC display her fire more often like she did in a recent match. The team responded after she became visibly upset and obviously said something to the team.
I still have hope for the season. Just wish they could find a solution to the inconsistency before it is too late.

Just wish they could find a solution to the inconsistency before it is too late. It may be worth noting that they lost 4 out of 5 (if memory serves) of the final points in the set after KSC's "fire," then won the next set, but then lost the 5th set and the match. So fire only took them so far.

I think Jess is eligible to return as well. Remains to be seen if she decides to. I thought Holland and Bilinovic had eligibility for one more year too or is that not right? If so hopefully we see them stick it out one more year.
