We've posted Talking Head's impressions of the Minnesota match (Talking Head played D1 volleyball and has coached successfully for many years). Here's the link: GophFigure: Talking Head’s 10 Takeaways from Minnesota’s Sweep
And here's an excerpt:
We asked Talking Head, who played D1 volleyball and has coached successfully for many years, to give us his impressions of the Minnesota match. Here are his 10 takeaways:
1. Minnesota Earned It
* First of all, a solid congratulations to the Minnesota Gophers. They were really on their game and had a few stellar performances — they earned the win.
2. Wake Me Up at Set Three
* Penn State, on the other hand, really did not do anything with consistency until the third set. It was a team loss.
* In game 3, both 6-1 So. OH Ali Frantti and 5-5 Sr. DS/libero Kendall Pierce passed well, with nice high balls that kept the team in system. Game 3 saw 11 tie scores and 2 lead changes. 3. Penn State’s Serving
* All too often, Penn State’s serving was in the 20 foot line range — placement that didn’t force the Minnesota players to lunge, didn’t put the ball at their chests, and for the most part didn’t seem to stress the Gophers serve receive patterns.
* Consequently, both Minnesota’s outsides often were hitting one-on-one off the quick tempo sets.
4. Penn State’s Transition
* Penn State’s transition was very stale and the Nittany Lions weren’t getting consistent heat on the ball.

Nice article. I particularly appreciated the information on who Minnesota targeted with their serves. You think Michigan has this information? Of course they do.

I really like Talking Head's insight from this and previous interviews. Perhaps even more so than Club Coach (no disrespect meant towards CC). If you could get them to do more analysis, I think that would be a boon for the website.

I'm grateful for the time they do give to all of us (as you obviously are too). We're lucky to have people like Club Ciach and Talking Head and psumaui who bring so much to the site and the forum. As do the posters who, like you, give time and thought to their posts and provide new information and insight.

The real bottom line is that Minnesota starters have all improved from last season and I'm not sure you can say that about a single PSU starter. I don't know why but perhaps the talent level is not able to meet our expectations and the graduation losses were just monumental. There are way too many team members who are not D-1 talented on the roster. Coach Rose has tried to coach them up but none have really proven themselves on the court.

Courtney, Whitney, Washington, Frantti, Lee, the Pierces, Weiskircher, Thelen and Holcomb are all D1 talent, and all have proven themselves multiple times on the court. I guarantee you, many top-flight programs would love to have them. Did they play well as a team against Minnesota? No. But bail on them now? Big mistake, imho.

I did not express myself very well. I wasn't referring to the players you mentioned above. Still I expected some of these players to step up more this season, except for Holcomb who is a true freshman, and I still hope they will. I am not bailing out and think we will rally in the tournament.
