PSU has a YOUNG team. I see no way that PSU ends up hosting a regional. There are too many good teams in the B1G and PSU will not be consistent enough to pull it out. So confused - I don't perceive the team as being "young" and I think that there is a decent chance of being in the top 4 by end of season. The Conference is always a grind. I think the lyric goes "Don't worry - be happy!"

Is serving to the opponent's libero the directive from the coaches? I hope so. She receives pretty poorly. (Does everything else well though)

Had to watch the match on delay (you know work and all), but I was impressed with MD. Way better team than I thought.
I don't think we started slowly. MD took a time out in set 1 and then implemented a defensive game plan that really worked. They camped out on the OHs and funneled attacks right to their very good Libero. That's why our middles were so efficient.
Coach changed our rotation starting set 2 and it helped, more and more as the match went on.
MD a very awkward opponent. Several servers who seemed not to care if the ball was long, they just hit as hard as possible. Gill especially did well to blunt the effect. MD has for years been an effective blocking team. So our hitters at first were trying complicated shots. As the match progressed, both Jess and Cam figured things out and in the end were successful.
If MD could receive serve even a little bit, they would win matches. How often was the MD setter trying to find hitters from off the court or way behind the 10 meter line? It was surprising that MD scored as well as they did with so many terrible passes - that is when they weren't giving up aces. But that is why we had so many blocks. Also, have we seen another lefty? Certainly not one who swings so hard. (That makes a difference for the blockers)
The team will look better against OR. OR will play more traditionally (by which I mean will feature at least some decent passing). So we will have more of a rhythm and not need to scramble quite as much.

The predictions that PSU will be a regional hosting team are at best 1 in 5. Right, this doesn't make any intuitive sense; But that's because you/I are looking at it logically. The RPI isn't logical, it's flawed. The RPI can be gamed, and it is by the ACC and SEC teams. You have teams that have a high RPI in other conferences who would be below the lowest level in the B1G.
And a large part of the RPI problem from the B1G point of view is that there are tto many poor (RPI poor) teams in the B1G. This year that would include Iowa, Rutgers, MSU, Mich, Northwestern and Maryland.
Then you have the problem of the NCAA volleyball committee. Some of the members in the past have baely known what a volleyball is; i.e. haven't played/coached volleyball at all. So consequently, when some committee members need to use the 'eye test' to judge between different teams, they don't have a good idea of who's good and who's not.
So then, what can be even worse, is that the committee may (edit) use ONLY statistics (RPI) to judge which teams are the best. That will always, for some teams, fail miserably. And because team A beat team B, and team B beat team C, doesn't mean that team A is better than team C. So that's why the 'eye test' needs, in some cases, to be used instead of stats.

The thing that impressed me the most last night was nobody panicked. They didn't need to, it's Maryland. PSU coaching was outstanding. MD was playing waaaay over their heads. In the 1st set they were defending against our unrelenting broadsides at an unconscious level. They were living the dream. The coaches still stuck with the game plan, made some minor rotation and service adjustments, and that was that. The blue and white machine went into another gear, and after the 2nd set I flipped the channel to watch a Love Boat rerun (just kidding).

Just for amusement purposes - I am guessing a regional would be in Rec Hall. Ice cream for all ...

One thing that I just noticed. Izzy is setting Caroline regularly, match after match. Some setters would stop setting her when she isn't on, is having a bad night. But Caroline is getting opportunity after opportunity. That's what it takes sometimes. I remember Kristen Carpenter talking about year 2011, the year after she was the setter for the PSU 2010 national championship team. She lost her setting job, got beat out for libero, got beat out for back court. Yet, she said that RR never gave up on her and gave her multiple opportunities. I don't think I could be a coach; you have to be too patient.
Edit: I just realized that my viewpoint was assuming that the fault is Caroline's. MB there is connection issue that Izzy and Caroline both need to work out.
