I don’t get what this coaching staff sees during the game that they can’t tell changes need to be made. Like you, I'm a fan of Alexa, and would also like to see her come in when Carol isn't doing well. I too wonder what the coaches see in Carol's play (when she's not doing well) that we don't. On the other hand, since I don't know what goes on in practices, perhaps it's that the coaches don't see in Alexa's play what we hope/think we'll see. I don't know. I have no idea. My best guess though, is that the coaches have decided that Carol will give the team the best chance to beat Nebraska on Friday - though realistically, I don't know if they will... so in a match like tonight's, when there's no chance Penn State will lose, they're leaving her in to figure things out, hoping that she'll be a better version on Friday. Again, I don't know, but that's my guess. I think as fans we always want to see the best, or quickly see some type of change. I think as coaches they're willing to let the team struggle through growing pains - "trust the process". Admittedly, sometimes a process can be flawed or wrong. Will their process prove to be correct? I don't know, perhaps we'll find out? Perhaps we will never know. To add - The coaches did recently replace a team captain (in the starting lineup) with an underclassman. Clearly they can, and are willing, to make changes when/if they think the change will help. On that note - Kudos to Joce! She has been playing really well. Trying to let her play her way out of it for the sake of not wanting her to go into the Nebraska match suffering from a lack of confidence is probably the best explanation for CJ not coming out of the Rutgers match, but let’s be honest, she’s playing her worst volleyball of the season at the most critical time of the season. We could have used that same opportunity to get the next player on the depth chart some playing time so that if CJ continues to struggle vs Nebraska or in the NCAA tournament, the player most likely to come in has recency and confidence too.

To help understand the rotation, I will say I think it would be great if there were press conferences with the staff or press pressure on the staff to provide some rationale for decisions. As a fan, a little more explaining would be great. I would love to hear those kind of questions asked in a press conference. You hear reporters ask questions all the time in men’s sports about who’s playing or not playing, and why, including performance reasons, injuries, academics, discipline issues, etc. You don’t often get great in depth explanations from coaches, but I would still love to hear the questions be asked. The interest level in volleyball in general, but certainly at programs like PSU, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Purdue, etc. merits the desire for media coverage (post game pressers, weekly radio shows, podcasts, etc) and fans don’t want to know what the players favorite ice cream is. We want to know about volleyball.

This conversation is getting a little too personally critical of a 20(?)-year old. Hopefully we’re all saying we want the best for each individual player and the team as a whole.

We can talk about performance numbers and stats all day. That’s a matter of public record and of interest as a fan of the game, but the implication that someone’ should stay in the match because their ego is too fragile to handle being removed from it or that someone who has otherwise been described by her coach as a team player and a 4.0 student who wants to be great at everything doesn’t play for any reason other than performance is simply irresponsible. Let’s all go eat turkey today beat Nebraska tomorrow. At least one of those things is a certainty.

As a fan, a little more explaining would be great. Coach speak-all of the players will contribute to the success of the team. All of the players must be ready to play. Observable Facts-we have looked for and found transfers to play all five hitting positions over the last three seasons. No preference has been shown to players on the basis of time with the program. There has been no hesitancy to change the starters, the rotations or even the positions players fill. Do we think any coach would tell us if he or she felt that a player was not good enough? Oh-and the team is ranked 4th.
